Wayland Additive, the developer of eBeam additive manufacturing, has appointed Chris Smith as its new Chief Technology Officer. He brings extensive expertise in AM technologies, materials science, and application development. He holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield, where his research pioneered a novel topology optimisation method for producing minimal-mass structures using AM.

Over the last eight years, Chris has built a strong career in the field—first at Reliance Precision and, since then, at Wayland Additive, where he has worked closely alongside outgoing CTO Ian Laidler on the development and commercialization of the company’s NeuBeam technology.

Having been involved with Wayland’s earliest R&D projects, Chris is uniquely positioned to lead the continued evolution of the NeuBeam platform, expand the Calibur3 production system’s capabilities, and drive the development of future products. His appointment reflects Wayland’s commitment to advancing eBeam metal AM and strengthening strategic technology partnerships worldwide.

While Ian Laidler retires after years of service and leadership, his technical achievements—particularly in controlling and managing electron beams—will remain central to Wayland’s technology DNA.
