Women in 3D Printing hosting ‘Ending Asian Hate’ virtual event
Event to spotlight challenges in the AM industry for the AAPI community
Like all industries, the additive manufacturing segment does not exist in a vacuum: it is shaped and informed by societal structures and trends, for better or for worse. This means that the 3D printing industry and community are not immune to the most insidious aspects of our world, including sexism and racism. For years, Women in 3D Printing has been an outspoken group, highlighting these inequities and issues within the industry.
To address the recent (though not unprecedented) spate of anti-Asian sentiment and attacks across North America, Women in 3D Printing is hosting an event which will hone in on the challenges faced by Asian American and Pacific Islander members in AM. The event will be held on April 20, 2021 (from 1pm to 2:30pm ET) and will feature a panel of women AM leaders from the Asian community.
“Women in 3D Printing is focused on closing the gender-gap in the 3D Printing industry,” said Nora Toure, Founder of Women in 3D Printing. “But as a global community, we also want to address diversity in its broader sense, which leads us to host and support this conversation today. By focusing on a solution, we can provide insight into what the Asian community has faced and work together for a better future.”
The online event aims to foster a forthright conversation about the Asian experience within AM, especially as of late. Women in 3D Printing says of its mission: “This event is focused on empowering, solutions-focused and all-female panel discussion around adversities faced by Asian individuals in today’s social climate.”
The panelists participating in the event include Dr. Ellen Lee, Technical Leader of Additive Manufacturing for Research & Advanced Engineering at the Ford Motor Company; Mina Lee, Manager of People and Culture at Makerbot; Eliana Fu, PhD, Industry Manager of Aerospace & Medical at TRUMPF; and Christina Perla, Founder and CEO of Makelab. The event will be moderated by SJ Jones, Application Development Engineer at Siemens Energy and an ambassador for the Oceania chapter of Women in 3D Printing.
