# When nanotechnology meets your 3D printer quantum dot filament is born

Imagine shoes that start glowing with intense light under black light. Or a theatrical costume that comes alive on stage in hypnotic colors. [Protopasta, an American filament manufacturer](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/proto-pasta/), presented a brand new type of material at CES 2026: a filament with quantum dots. It was developed in collaboration with Quantum Light, a company specializing in quantum technology.

To understand what this filament is actually about, one must first explain what these dots are. Quantum dots are tiny semiconductor crystals with a diameter of only a few nanometers. For comparison, a human hair is about 80,000 nanometers thick. They are so minuscule that they are governed by the laws of quantum mechanics rather than classical physics.

In practice, this means that electrons confined in such a small space behave similarly to electrons in isolated atoms, hence the name "artificial atoms". The key property is that the size of a quantum dot directly determines the color of light it emits. Smaller dots glow blue, while larger ones glow red. By changing the size, one can therefore precisely "program" the color.

Quantum dots are not, however, an entirely new technology. They are already widely used in QLED televisions (where they provide exceptionally vivid and pure colors), in medical imaging, and in modern solar cells. What Protopasta did was bring this advanced technology to the world of 3D printing at an accessible price.

The greatest attraction of the quantum dot filament is its reaction to black UV light, especially at a wavelength of 365 nm. Under ultraviolet radiation, the material produces a phenomenon called hyperfluorescence. This is an extraordinarily intense, vivid glow that makes a stunning visual impression.

In normal light, a printed object looks like an ordinary item. But switch on a UV lamp, and it suddenly comes alive in spectacular colors. This feature is a property that opens up enormous possibilities—from art and fashion to entertainment and industrial applications.

What can you do with it? This is where the most intriguing part begins. Protopasta deliberately does not impose a single answer to this question. Quantum dots can certainly be applied in the fashion industry—designer Daniel Bettencourt (known as Kaizen3D) is already experimenting with 3D printing in fashion. Quantum dot filament allows the creation of clothing elements or jewelry that visually transform into something completely different under UV light.

Another excellent application is theater—stage costumes, props, or decorations that take on an entirely new dimension under black light. The entertainment industry also uses the technology; imagine glow-in-the-dark golf or escape rooms with atmospheric accents that glow in vivid colors. The filament can also find use in industry, where the material can be used as an indicator or marker in production processes that require UV visibility for practical significance.

Behind the project is Olga Alexapoulou from Quantum Light, a scientist and artist who developed a method for preparing quantum dots in pigment form. This made it possible to literally "mix" them into 3D printing filament.

Protopasta, a Washington-based company operating since 2013, specializes in creating unique filaments - including metallic, multicolored, and those with various material additives. The quantum dot filament is the next step on this path, and this time it represents the first such advanced nanotechnology material.

One of the most important aspects of this launch was creating a material that is visually surprising while also affordable. Protopasta makes the filament available through the Endless Exploration subscription, a plan that delivers new, unique materials every month. The subscription costs $24.99 for a 1.75 mm spool package and $89.99 for a 1.75 mm/spool package. The March shipment includes three colors of quantum dot filament.

The story of the quantum dot filament shows that advanced technology is no longer reserved exclusively for scientists, the electronics industry, and medicine. It can now reach the hands of artists, hobbyists, and innovators around the world. The way it is used is entirely open-ended, which means the boundary between science and art is blurring, and advanced materials are becoming tools for creative expression.
