Welcome to AMTech 2022, the biggest show in India

Enthusiasm for additive manufacturing is sky high in the giant South Asian country

Stay up to date with everything that is happening in the wonderful world of AM via our LinkedIn community.

The 3D printing journey of AMTech, now the leading additive manufacturing exhibit in India, started in 2015, based on the need in the Indian ecosystem for a credible platform for knowledge sharing and business networking to keep up with pace of this technology. “It has been an interesting and challenging journey, albeit a fulfilling one since 2015,” says Aditya Chandavarkar, Co-founder of AMChronicle, the company organizing the event. “AMTech has evolved from being a small regional show in Mumbai to a National level show to now arguably being one of the largest dedicated Additive Manufacturing tradeshows in India, APAC and Middle East.”

The new edition, AMTech 2022, will take place on 2-3 December and it will be re-locating from Mumbai to one of the major technology hubs in India – Hyderabad. In addition, the entire AMTech family is growing. “As a part of our Additive Manufacturing ecosystem building activities supported by AMTech we are organizing the region’s first-ever Metal Additive Manufacturing Symposium (MAMS) on 27-28th July at the Taj Vivanta Yeshwantpur, Bengaluru supported by NCAM and CEMILAC,” Aditya continues. “The intention of this event is to create a User-Focused/Technical Metal Additive Manufacturing forum to bring the entire Metal AM ecosystem on one platform including Software, Hardware, Materials, Applications, Research, Standards bodies and Users.

“I would like to take this opportunity to really thank our early supporters who had the belief in our vision,” Aditya adds.

The goal of AMTech is simple, the event is committed to being a forum that provides value to the industry and a support system that provides the necessary tools to advance the adoption of Additive Manufacturing by building awareness, education, technology showcase and more. “We stay true to our core by providing what the industry in this region needs to Shape their AM Business,” says Chandavarkar.

Some of the major global stakeholders of the technology that have already confirmed their participation as exhibitors include EOS, SLM Solutions, 3D System, Formlabs, Stratasys, Markforged, Materialise, Hexagon and leading Indian players like Imaginarium, Shree Rapid Technology, Intech Additive Solutions, Wipro 3D, Objectify Technologies, AMACE, WOL3D. “We will see many new global and Indian brands joining AMTech who have not participated before join in the 2022 edition, ” Aditya says, adding that new announcements will be made soon.

Diverse technologies are being adopted in India across the spectrum starting from entry-level material extrusion printers to the higher end production-ready metal laser powder bed systems with 4 lasers. AMTech covers the entire spectrum including software, materials, hardware and service providers. The exhibit also sees a good balance between polymer and metal technology which allows the business visitor to understand the entire spectrum of technology and be empowered to make decisions.

Typical visitors include AM adopters from the automotive and aerospace industries as well as engineers, tooling experts, die/mold makers, industrial designers, foundry owners, software developers, prototyping specialists, architects, investors/entrepreneurs, and metallurgists. The exhibit also attracts professionals from the healthcare industry including implant manufacturers, dentists/orthodontists, and prosthetic specialists. Academicians and consumer goods designers also regularly attend.

One of the biggest highlights from the show is an ASTM Workshop co-located with AMTech. “The understanding of standards and certification is very critical for scaling up of the Additive Manufacturing ecosystem in India,” says Chandavarkar “This one-day AM Workshop, jointly developed by ASTM AM COE and AM Chronicle will be held on 1st December at the Novotel HICC in Hyderabad so that industry stakeholders traveling for AMTech can take the benefit. This workshop will be focused on Additive Manufacturing Materials and Processes”

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is gaining widespread adoption globally, largely considered as the cornerstone to Advanced Manufacturing. While recent developments in other aspects of AM such as data, automation, and cybersecurity are important, understanding AM materials and processes is fundamental and critical to using the technology for key applications in sectors such as Aviation, Spaceflight, Medical, and Energy.

This workshop will be open to all Additive Manufacturing professionals interested in process optimization and scan strategy considerations, the mechanical performance of AM parts, microstructural analysis, design for AM and applications, pre and post-processing requirements in AM as well as AM test methods

Another highlight of AMTech 2022 is the new partnership with AM Ventures. Start-ups are key for the next wave of disruptive growth for Additive Manufacturing. They need a conducive environment to grow and need to be nurtured to reach their real potential. “With this thought, we decided to start working on dedicated activities for start-ups,” Aditya says. “We are really excited about the partnership with AM Ventures on this initiative as they are one of the leading global venture capital firms dedicated to industry 3D printing. We felt they were the right fit for this as they understand the challenges in scaling up a 3D Printing business.”

As one of the activities in partnership with AM Ventures, we will be organizing the Startup Pitch Event at AMTech 2022 on 3rd December 2022, which aptly happens to be World 3D Printing Day. This Startup event will also be supported by ASTM and few other leading local venture capital and investment groups focused on early-stage and deeptech startups. This opportunity will be open for start-ups in India, APAC and the Middle East. We will be opening the registration for the AMTech Startup Pitch soon. In addition to the physical Startup Pitch event, an online AM Start-up content series on AM Chronicle will showcase global 3D Printing startups.

This positive influence from the government is definitely motivating the industry and based on current projections, AMTech is poised to at least grow 30% from the previous pre-COVID edition in 2019. The growing success of AMTech is a reflection of the rapid growth in AM adoption in India, with Prime Minister Modi also directly involved in promoting and pushing the technology’s adoption. “There definitely has been a government push for the adoption of Additive Manufacturing in India starting from the school level with the Atal Tinkering Labs and then also at the policy level in many different ways,” Aditya agrees.  “The Indian defense establishments are also very keen to invest and use additive manufacturing as this allows them to have better control on the supply chain and also reduce the inventory cost on spares.”

Out of many initiatives, the one which the industry is very hopeful about is the recent collaboration between The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Emerging Technologies wing of the Telangana State government to setup a National Centre of Additive Manufacturing (NCAM) which will act as a catalyst for AM in India. NCAM is also a supporting organization for AMTech in Hyderabad.

Now, the next major shift that is expected to take real effect in a couple of years is the advent of indigenously manufactured industrial 3D printers including construction 3D printers, hybrid DED systems, laser powder bed systems, locally manufactured materials and software. Another is that users of this technology both private and government have matured considerably if you compare the pre-pandemic period, leading to more optimized use of Additive Manufacturing and more cases where the user is open to exploring additive manufacturing as a solution. “My expectation or rather my recommendation to the Indian AM market is for the industry stakeholders to work together in healthy competition to build demand and inturn scale the AM industry and reap the fruits of hard work, perseverance and patience,” Aditya Chandavarkar concludes. “There is also is a pressing need for Indian engineers, startup co-founders and AM companies to exude confidence and work in the direction of putting India on the global AM map.”
