VulcanForms to build million-square-foot Massachusetts plant, adding 1,000 jobs
State tax credit backs expansion expected to add more than 1,000 jobs across aerospace, defense, and medical sectors
VulcanForms is preparing to construct a facility of up to one million square feet at its existing Devens, Massachusetts site, marking a significant expansion of the company’s vertically integrated additive manufacturing operations. The project is projected to create 1,063 new jobs spanning the medical, aerospace and defense, industrial, and consumer goods sectors.
The Massachusetts Economic Assistance Coordinating Council (EACC) confirmed it has approved $21.26 million in state tax credits for the project through the Economic Development Incentive Program (EDIP), a performance-based scheme administered by the Massachusetts Office of Business Development (MOBD) that ties tax credits to job creation and capital investment commitments.
A vote of confidence in Massachusetts manufacturing
Governor Maura Healey framed the approval as part of a wider pattern of business investment in the state.
“Massachusetts continues to be a place where businesses choose to invest, grow and create jobs,” she stated. “Through the Economic Development Incentive Program, we’re helping companies expand, strengthening local economies and creating good jobs in communities across Massachusetts.”
Economic Development Secretary Eric Paley pointed to the diversity of sectors committing to the state. “The Economic Development Incentive Program is one of the state’s most effective tools for supporting business expansion and job creation,” he said. “From robotics and artificial intelligence to advanced manufacturing and life sciences, these companies are making long-term commitments to grow here. That’s a strong vote of confidence in Massachusetts as a place where innovation can scale and businesses can succeed.”
Third plant for a growing manufacturer
The Devens facility will be VulcanForms’ third in Massachusetts, alongside existing sites in Devens and Newburyport. The company, which uses industrial metal 3D printers, machining equipment, and production systems to manufacture parts for multiple industries, secured $220 million in Series D funding back in January — capital the company stated would help scale its manufacturing platform and support domestic supply chain development.
The broader EDIP round approved at the June EACC meeting covered 11 projects expected to generate 2,793 net new jobs, retain 1,503 positions, and draw more than $1.4 billion in private investment statewide in exchange for $52m in tax credits.
