In the past few years, sand binder jetting specialist voxeljet has faced numerous challenges, including supply bottlenecks and geopolitical conflicts, as a technology company in a highly competitive market environment. Despite these hurdles, the voxeljet achieved its best consolidated result in its history, marking the 2023 financial year – which saw the company delist from the Nasdaq index – as its most profitable yet.

Despite a 25% reduction in printed parts, a 41% decrease in machine hours, and an 18.5% decline in build height compared to the previous year, voxeljet remains optimistic about the future. This apparent contradiction reflects market trends and developments, signaling the emergence of 3D printing as a new standard in various applications.

The significant decrease of 25% in printed components compared to previous years reflects a decline in overall production volume. However, this trend is largely positive, particularly for its binder jetting technology, as the industry shifts towards larger-scale components. Orders for large-scale forms, such as structural components in the automotive sector under the term ‘Gigacastings,’ have been increasing, resulting in cost reductions for both voxeljet and its clientele.

Another positive development is the increasing batch sizes, which align favorably with voxeljet’s binder jetting technology. Trust in 3D printing is growing, leading to the development of components explicitly intended for additive manufacturing. Despite higher costs compared to conventional manufacturing technologies, the benefits of optimized components increasingly outweigh the expenses.

The benefits of cast parts produced via 3D printing significantly surpass those of conventionally manufactured ones, primarily due to functionally optimized components. Superior products become compelling selling points for clients, leading to significant savings in tooling and inventory costs.

voxeljet’s employees play a significant role in the company’s success, contributing to enhanced business outcomes through expertise in handling components, optimized planning, and maintenance of machines. Continuous improvements in process technologies and machine construction, driven by advancements in print head technology and materials, have resulted in higher machine availability and reduced waste.

While additive manufacturing may not be as prominently featured as it once was, it has reached a level of productivity where the focus is on delivering clear benefits to ensure competitive advantages and better products. The trend towards higher quantities and broader applications confirms its status as a ‘standard,’ making voxeljet optimistic about the future and contributing to its most profitable year in 2023.
