# Vivobarefoot launches custom-fit 3D printed Tabi Gen 02 sandals

Vivobarefoot, a footwear company specializing in minimalist "barefoot" shoes, has embraced [3D printing](https://www.voxelmatters.com/category/3d-printed-consumer-products/3d-printed-footwear/) for its ability to offer greater customization for wearers. Last year, the company launched its first 3D printed product, the [Tabi Gen 01 sandal](https://www.voxelmatters.com/vivobarefoot-steps-it-up-with-3d-printed-custom-sandal/), via VivoBiome, its scan-to-print circular footwear platform. Now, Vivobarefoot has unveiled the next generation of its 3D printed sandal, the Tabi Gen 02, custom made for every foot.

Since its founding, Vivobarefoot's mission has been simple: to develop barefoot shoes that enhance the structure and function of feet rather than restrict them. As the company writes: "We believe the best shoe is the one that's barely there—because feet don't need more to function naturally, they need less." With scanning and 3D printing at its fingertips, the company has been leveling up in this mission. That is, not only is it designing barefoot shoes in standard sizes, it can actually customize shoes to the wearer's feet to achieve the elusive perfect fit.

When Tabi Gen 01 was unveiled by Vivobarefoot last year, only 590 pairs of the 3D printed sandal were ultimately made. To obtain a pair, customers were invited to in-store stations to have their feet 3D scanned, after which the custom-fit sandals would be 3D printed using SLS technology. The split-toe shoe, which retailed for £140 (~$190), featured a simple flip-flop upper and an outsole engineered for traction.

The new Tabi Gen 02 bears a similar profile to the Gen 01 but has been improved on a number of fronts. Specifically, Vivobarefoot says it has reduced the weight of the sandal while boosting precision and comfort. While we reported that the Gen 01 sandal was 3D printed using SLS technology, the Tabi Gen 02 is made using [Carbon's](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/carbon3d/) Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) process in cooperation with [OECHSLER](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/oechsler-ag/). The material used to make the bespoke sandals is CARBON BL6 PU foam. The process for obtaining the 3D printed sandals involves going to get your feet 3D scanned using the Volumental system. Presently, the scanning is only offered at three Vivobarefoot locations (in London, Bristol, and Prague), so the product is still limited in its availability. If you are able to get a 3D foot scan, the resulting 3D model is saved under your email until your order is placed. Once the purchase has been made via the VivoBiome platform, the process of printing the custom sandals begins.

The Tabi Gen 02 sandals are listed for £110 on the VivoBiome website and are presently available in one color: moonrock grey. The Gen 02 surely won't be the last iteration of the custom barefoot sandals. As the company says: "We are always improving—and the best learning comes from the people who wear [the shoes].
