Verbatim announced the launch of the DURABIO filament for FFF 3D printing, a transparent biological technical material developed by Mitsubishi Chemical that combines the properties of Polycarbonate (PC) and Polymethacrylate (PMMA). The result is a material with excellent optical and mechanical properties, resistant to high temperatures, scratches and abrasion, with excellent photo-transmission and UV resistance. The filament will be available in transparent, glossy black and glossy white with a high gloss.

Mitsubishi Chemical originally developed DURABIO as a substitute for glass and it is already used in automotive and mobile phones for objects such as touch screens, consoles and dashboard components as well as in external radiator grilles.

DURABIO is BPA-free and based on renewable sources, using isosorbide as the main monomer, making it particularly attractive to environmentally conscious customers. By making it available as a 3D printable material, designers can now more easily develop working models or prototypes using the same material that will be used for mass production.

Hidetaka Yabe, President of Verbatim GmbH, commented: “Verbatim’s goal is to drive new markets in the 3D printing industry and a key role is played by special 3D printing materials developed by Mitsubishi Chemical, which see DURABIO as the latest exciting newcomer.”

It will be possible to test samples of DURABIO at the next Formnext show and the new material will be made available on the market starting from January 2019. Other new products will soon be presented by Verbatim, including PET-G and high-speed PLA.
