# Uppsala University opens WISE Additive node

The Uppsala University node of WISE Additive has officially opened, joining Sweden’s national research infrastructure for additive manufacturing.

WISE (the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability) is a long-term program focused on [advancing sustainable materials science](https://www.voxelmatters.com/am-for-sustainability-am-focus-2024-ebook/). As part of the WISE Research Technology Platforms, new equipment has been delivered to [Chalmers University of Technology](https://www.voxelmatters.com/chalmers-university-of-technology-inaugurates-am-infrastructure/), Linköping University, and Uppsala University. Together, these three sites now form the WISE Additive RTP, designed to strengthen Sweden’s national capacity in additive manufacturing.

At the AM@Å Lab inside the Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University has expanded its capabilities with new systems for [metal powder production](https://www.voxelmatters.com/eos-releases-four-new-metal-powders-for-lpbf/) and characterization, along with post-processing tools for metal AM components. A newly installed micro-CT system now allows non-destructive internal inspection of printed parts at high resolution.

## Research, presentations, and technology development

The inauguration began with an address from Professor Cecilia Persson, Scientific Director of WISE Additive, outlining the Uppsala node’s role within the wider national infrastructure. The programme also included equipment demonstrations and presentations on ongoing AM research at Uppsala University.

Invited speaker Professor Iain Todd of the University of Sheffield offered an international perspective on metal AM, highlighting recent progress in powder recovery, reuse, and recycling.

## Ceremony and outlook

The event closed with a ribbon-cutting led by Vice-Rector Charlotte Platzer Björkman, joined by Professor Olle Eriksson, Co-Director of WISE at Uppsala University, followed by a tour of the upgraded lab.

The new infrastructure significantly strengthens Uppsala University’s research capabilities and opens the door to deeper collaborations across academia and industry. Over time, this investment is expected to support technological development and drive more sustainable practices within additive manufacturing.
