# Unlocking scalable success with EOS North America’s AM Turnkey Program

As industrial adoption of additive manufacturing accelerates, companies are increasingly seeking structured, low-risk pathways to bring this powerful technology in-house. Yet, despite growing interest and investment, the transition from traditional manufacturing to AM-led production is often filled with technical, logistical, and educational hurdles. Recognizing these pain points, [EOS](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/eos/) [North America](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/eos/) launched the AM Turnkey Program—a comprehensive, hands-on initiative designed to streamline the process of AM adoption, from first print to full-scale production.

At the core of this initiative is [EOS’s Additive Minds applied engineering and workforce development team](https://www.voxelmatters.com/eos-additive-minds-offers-u-s-navy-funded-training-to-mib-suppliers/), a group of highly skilled AM engineers and strategists who specialize in scaling with 3D printing. Through the AM Turnkey Program, Additive Minds delivers a deeply immersive experience where EOS engineers co-develop production-ready workflows with the customer. The model goes far beyond project engineering. It places the customer's own machine at an EOS facility, allowing teams to benefit from the full weight of EOS infrastructure, personnel, and decades of OEM expertise before relocating the system to their own site.

In this exclusive interview, VoxelMatters speaks with Dr. Ankit Saharan, Director of Metals Technology, Global Additive Minds, and Anja Miles, Additive Minds Project Engineering Manager and a key leader in the AM Turnkey initiative, to explore how this one-of-a-kind program is enabling a new generation of manufacturers to fast-track their additive capabilities. **What prompted EOS North America to launch the AM Turnkey program, and how does it respond to specific market needs?**

Anja: *The AM Turnkey program was created to address the evolving needs of companies adopting additive manufacturing. As AM becomes more widely used for production, the initial question from companies that are in the process of starting their AM journey has changed—from “Can this be done with AM?” to “How can we ramp up AM production while at the same time setting up our facility, developing our processes, and training our team?” The Turnkey program addresses this by providing a highly customizable, ready-to-implement solution that enables companies to meet their short-term production needs while avoiding common mistakes, ensuring a smoother transition into successful AM adaptation.*

Ankit: *To add to this slightly, the turnkey offering from EOS Additive Minds not only tries to address the AM portion of the value chain but also helps customer with other steps in the process chain including but not limited to heat treatment, machining, and inspection with our existing partner network to help provide wholistic value and a true end-to-end turnkey solution.*

**What are the most common barriers to industrial 3D printing adoption that AM Turnkey aims to eliminate?**

Anja: *Through our experience, we've identified two main challenges when companies first start bringing AM in-house: facility readiness and personnel training. Every AM Turnkey project we’ve supported so far had a clear and short-term objective—whether it was design allowables generation, bridge production, process optimization, or application development. In each case, there was an urgent need to achieve results quickly and a zero-tolerance margin for error. The AM Turnkey program is designed to reduce these barriers by providing the infrastructure and expertise from day one, enabling companies to move forward with confidence and demonstrate the feasibility of their goal.*

Ankit: *One of the main benefits of the turnkey program is its hands-on customer experience.** We provide customers with the ability to be hands-on for part or the full duration of the program, with many opting in for long-term engagement on the EOS site, which ensures personnel are fully prepared to handle challenges when they take possession of these machines.*

**In what ways does AM Turnkey distinguish itself from other additive manufacturing consultancy or support offerings?**

Anja: *In the AM Turnkey program, “Turnkey” means that the system is located at an EOS facility and operated by EOS personnel. While the customer typically owns the machine, we also offer rental options. This arrangement is a key differentiator, allowing each project to benefit from EOS’s decades of expertise as a machine OEM, as well as the hands-on knowledge of best-in-class AM engineers across all areas of additive manufacturing.*

Ankit: *Customers gain access to our facility, including our test labs, EOS Academy training content, and our service team, and are welcome to visit us and work alongside us throughout the project. This collaborative, immersive approach allows customers to observe and learn as we execute the project together closely. Turnkey projects typically span from several months to a year, and by the end of that period, our EOS engineers often feel like an integral part of the customer’s team, working together on a shared goal and building lasting relationships.*

**Which types of organizations stand to benefit the most from this all-inclusive approach—are we talking primarily Tier One suppliers, research labs, or others?**

Anja: *Every AM Turnkey project we've delivered has been uniquely tailored—there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The program is industry-agnostic and has proven valuable across a wide range of sectors. Whether it's a Tier One supplier or a company entering additive manufacturing for the first time, the common thread is the need for a structured, accelerated path to AM adoption. The flexibility of the Turnkey approach enables us to tailor our solutions to each organization's unique goals, timelines, and challenges, regardless of industry or application.*

Ankit: *The success has been mainly found with OEMs and certain tier 1s, though we are seeing more and more downstream suppliers requesting such services as well. We have served many industries, including government agencies, defense contractors, aerospace, energy, automotive, and medical, to name a few.*

**How does EOS ensure that the transition from planning to full production is seamless and risk-free for customers?**

Anja: *EOS’ goal is to provide a smooth and low-risk transition by maintaining close, consistent collaboration with the customer throughout the entire Turnkey project. We meet multiple times each week to provide progress updates, share technical learnings, and align expectations. This high level of engagement ensures that the customer is prepared to take over ownership of the system once it is relocated to their facility.*

Ankit: *In addition to ongoing communication, we deliver a final project handover. This includes detailed documentation of all work completed at the EOS site, along with clear instructions on how to replicate processes at the customer’s location. One of the most valuable deliverables is a technical data package for production parts, which includes build files, process parameters, post-processing details, testing standards, and more—everything needed to continue production with consistency and seamless continuity.*

**Can you elaborate on the "production guarantee" provided at the end of the AM Turnkey program—what does it entail in practice?**

Ankit: *The "production guarantee" at the end of the AM Turnkey program refers to EOS’s assurance that the machine will meet our committed performance and quality standards. It’s not just a promise—it’s proven through the turnkey projects, where EOS works hands-on to validate that the system can meet the customer’s specific production requirements. This includes demonstrating repeatability, part quality, and stability in a real manufacturing environment. By the time the machine transitions to your operation, it’s not just installed—it’s production-proven, reducing your risk and ensuring you're ready to hit the ground running.*

**What role does the Additive Minds team play throughout the program, and how crucial is their involvement to project outcomes?**

Anja: *Additive Minds is EOS’s applied engineering and workforce development arm, playing a central role in every AM Turnkey project. The team is responsible for the complete lifecycle of the project—from project pitch to initial scoping and planning through to hands-on execution. Each customer is assigned a dedicated Additive Minds project manager who serves as their primary point of contact and is responsible for coordinating across all aspects of the program.*

*This engineer not only manages all internal EOS activities but will also connect the customer with other EOS departments, which will support the customer after the machine is relocated. While Additive Minds services are available to all EOS customers, our involvement is especially critical during Turnkey projects. Our engineers bring deep expertise in system operation, file optimization, software tools, post-processing strategies, and inspection planning. Their ability to design production builds with post-processing needs in mind ensures that the customer’s outcomes are efficient, repeatable, and production-ready from day one.*

**How important is physical co-location and hands-on collaboration between EOS engineers and customer teams during the project lifecycle?**

Ankit: *Having the machine located at an EOS facility is a big advantage. Everything is already set up and ready to go. Our dedicated turnkey bays are ITAR-compliant and conveniently located near essential equipment, *[*including a Solukon unit for powder removal*](https://www.voxelmatters.com/solukon-launches-new-sfm-at1500-s-system-for-2-ton-parts/)*, a machine shop for post-processing, a secure area for powder storage, and meeting rooms. We also work closely with a network of accredited labs and trusted thermal processing partners that we’ve vetted over time. Getting all of this up and running at a new customer site can be time-consuming and effort-intensive, but at EOS, it’s already in place, so we can hit the ground running.*

*While we always welcome customers to visit and work on building and machine setup with us, it’s not a requirement. Some teams are very hands-on and spend a significant amount of time with us throughout the project, even operating their systems on-site. Others might only visit once at the beginning to kick things off. The setup is flexible enough to match the customer's needs, and we’re ready to support either approach.*

**Could you share a specific example or success story where AM Turnkey significantly accelerated time-to-production for a client?**

Anja: [*One of our most exciting current Turnkey projects is with Boom Supersonic*](https://www.voxelmatters.com/boom-supersonic-is-flying-at-the-speed-of-am/)*. They had an urgent need to produce parts for their Symphony engine. Still, like many companies early in their AM journey, they were facing several challenges all at once: a tight timeline, a clear production need, a new facility, a team that had little experience with metal AM, and no established post-processing network.*

*This project is a textbook example of the value the AM Turnkey program brings. We kicked things off in the spring, and the system is scheduled to relocate to Boom’s facility in the fall. In the meantime, we’re producing nearly 200 parts as part of the Turnkey scope. Additive Minds is handling the entire process—from part printing & powder removal to subcontracted thermal processing, support removal, EDM, dimensional inspection, non-destructive testing, and mechanical testing.*

*At the same time, Boom’s engineering team is taking Additive Minds Academy courses and preparing their facility so they’re ready to hit the ground running once the machine arrives. It’s a true end-to-end partnership, and a great example of how Turnkey can dramatically shorten the time from planning to production.*

*Another great example is a 2023 Turnkey project we completed with the U.S. Navy. The Navy identified laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) as a critical manufacturing method to reduce long lead times for submarine parts and to help reshore production to the U.S. In partnership with Phillips Federal and Austal USA, they established a Center of Excellence in Danville, Virginia. However, even before the new facility was ready, there was already an urgent need to demonstrate the feasibility of producing submarine components with metal additive manufacturing.*

*To keep the program on track, we installed the Navy’s system in one of our ITAR-compliant Turnkey bays. From there, we executed a full NAVSEA Tech Pub qualification and successfully delivered four Technical Data Packages (TDPs). Each part was printed, heat-treated, machined, inspected, and handed off with full documentation.*

*Once the Danville facility was completed, we relocated the machine and supported the team through a successful requalification process. They have since continued TDP production, building on the momentum and experience gained through the Turnkey program.*

**Looking ahead, how do you envision the evolution of AM Turnkey—are there plans to expand its scope, scale, or technical capabilities?**

Anja: *When we first launched the AM Turnkey program, we started with just a single room. Over time, we’ve significantly expanded our capabilities—we can now support 4 to 5 Turnkey projects in parallel. We've upgraded our facility, streamlined internal processes, and added more equipment to meet the growing demand and complexity of these projects.*

*So far, we haven’t encountered a Turnkey project we had to turn down other than lack of space, and we don’t see any major gaps in our offering.  That being said, we constantly seek customer feedback to improve the Turnkey experience. Our goal is to deliver a true white-glove service—one that not only ensures quality and performance but also gives customers early access to our latest and greatest technology offerings. Continuous improvement is ingrained in our DNA, and we continually evolve our solutions to stay ahead of customer needs.*
