University of Sydney installs its first MELD machine
The university will be focusing its research on AFSD for civil structures and hybrid manufacturing

The University of Sydney has installed its first MELD machine, adopting the ability to produce large-scale metal components with exceptional properties and performance. The machine, an L3 system, has recently been installed at the Sydney Manufacturing Hub’s Metallurgical Facility for Solid State Additive Manufacturing, where Dr. Anna Paradowska and the team at the Sydney Manufacturing Hub will operate it.
Dr. Paradowska and her team will be focusing on large-scale manufacturing and repairing civil structures using high entropy and novel alloys, as well as exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in manufacturing.
Research areas will include the renovation and restoration of bridges and transportation means, applications in connection and bespoke features, and architectural applications. The University of Sydney and Sydney Manufacturing Hub will be completing joint work with the University of Western Sydney, Monash University, and others. Dr. Paradowska also expressed interest in creating new experiences for the students at the University of Sydney, bringing about a new generation of engineers experienced in new and emerging technologies.
MELD 3D printers for metal are well-suited for infrastructure repair and improvements. The printers use Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD), invented by MELD Manufacturing Corporation, to print metal alloys in a solid state. The process yields parts with properties exceeding forging requirements.
This installation continues Australia’s investment in MELD’s technology, which is also being used to support initiatives in circular economy and shipbuilding. MELD Manufacturing Corporation will join the University in participating in Indo Pacific 2025 in Sydney later this year.
