WSG, a South Korean bioprocess solutions provider, and its subsidiary KCell Biosciences have announced a strategic partnership with Singapore-based Umami Bioworks, a 3D printed cell-cultured seafood technology company. The partnership, formalized on September 5th, aims to establish a platform for cell-cultured seafood production in South Korea by combining the strengths of each company: KCell’s expertise in cell culture media, WSG’s bioprocessing hardware, and Umami’s cutting-edge seafood cultivation technology.

Umami Bioworks partners with WSG and KCell Biosciences to establish a platform for cell-cultured seafood production in South Korea.

The collaboration seeks to create a scalable and sustainable pipeline for domestic production of cell-cultured seafood, ensuring regulatory compliance and addressing the demand for ethical and environmentally friendly protein alternatives. The companies will work together to meet food safety standards and secure regulatory approval in South Korea. Umami will focus on providing seafood products (including those that are 3D printed) that meet local market demands and sustainability expectations, while KCell will supply advanced cell culture media and WSG will provide the essential bioreactor hardware for production scaling.

The partnership is set to accelerate the introduction of cell-cultured seafood to the South Korean market, with plans for a GMP-compliant facility to produce eel and other seafood species. This initiative is seen as a significant step toward the commercialization of cell-cultured seafood in South Korea, with broader implications for the Asian market.
