UM-Flint to Unveil New $11 Million STEM Building with 3D Printers and Wind Tunnel Lab
The new design studio for engineers will allow students to create cutting-edge projects, according to a news release from the university. Projects may include creating robots, some designed to do acts as simple as spreading salt on food to assisting with wheelchairs, the release said.
The studio and shop will be equipped with milling machines and other hands-on equipment, as well as 3D printers and a lab with a wind tunnel. It will also have a teaching space and classroom for engineering courses that correspond to the labs.
The University of Michigan-Flint will start construction of an addition next year, thanks in part to an $11 million grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
More information about the new studio is expected to be released, along with changes coming to the university’s STEM disciplines, next Thursday afternoon, April 13.
In that project, construction on a new, 65,000-square-foot addition was expected to begin this year and be completed in 2020. Labs for instruction and research, as well as interactive classrooms are expected to be included in the new wing.
