UK’s National Centre for Additive Manufacturing invests in a Digital Metal 3D printer

Digital Metal’s unique high-precision metal binder-jetting technology continues to raise great interest in the AM field. The UK’s renowned center for innovative technology, the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing (NCAM), has just decided to add a Digital Metal printer to their already extensive range of advanced manufacturing equipment.

The NCAM is part of the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and offers deep expertise across a comprehensive range of AM processes, from initial design to final delivery of pre-production parts.

“It’s a very fast technology that can create complicated and highly detailed designs”, says Dr David Brackett, AM Technology Manager at the NCAM. “The NCAM are delighted to be able to offer the Digital Metal technology to the companies we work with.”

The printer will be available to both member companies and other organizations interested in testing the technology and the capabilities of high precision binder jetting. This technology is not available anywhere else in the UK and provides an opportunity for UK industry to understand and utilize its unique capabilities, especially on small, highly complex, high precision parts.

“Our printer will be delivered and installed at the NCAM in July”, says Ralf Carlström, General Manager at Digital Metal. “Within a week, the first real tests will start. The NCAM personnel have already performed training on the very same equipment at Digital Metal’s premises to make sure they will be able to operate it safely and efficiently.”

Digital Metal, is a proprietary high precision metal binder-jetting AM technology developed by Höganäs AB, is making great strides into territories previously ruled by conventional manufacturing technologies. As of last year more than 200,000 components have had been produced by Digital Metal, relying uniquely on internal systems. In 2017, the company began offering its systems for sale to third parties.
