Thor3D launches Calibry affordable hand-held 3D scanner

Priced at €4,990 the new 3D scanner captures up to 3M points per second

3D scanning company Thor3D has introduced its newest hand-held 3D scanner, Calibry. The new device offers an affordable and lightweight 3D scanning solution suitable for capturing medium and large objects as well as objects with sharp edges, hair and black or shiny surfaces—properties have posed challenges to 3D scanners in the past.

Priced at €4,990 (USD $5,790 or RMB 39,990), the new Calibry 3D scanner is the first of Thor3D’s products to integrate a patent-pending camera, rather than off-the-shelf cameras. Notably, the company owes the 3D scanner’s affordability to this proprietary technology. The built-in texture camera (2.3MP) can reportedly capture up to 3M points per second and enables users to capture a wider range of objects, including those with sharp edges, hair or fur-like textures and black or shiny surfaces.

Looking at specifications, the Calibry delivers accuracies of up to 0.1 mm and resolutions up to 0.3 mm. It also only weighs 700 g (1.5 lbs) making it extremely lightweight and thus fully portable. The device is also equipped with a user-friendly built-in touchscreen display for easy control.

“We named the scanner Calibry because the device is small and fast like a Hummingbird, which is also known as Colibri,” explained Anna Zevelyov, CEO of Thor3D. “We also intentionally called its ‘cAlibry’ instead of ‘cOlibri’ because it echoes the work calibrated, meaning precise and accurate. I am confident that this device will be very popular with engineers, medical practitioners and educators because it is affordable, easy to use and can scan objects that were difficult to scan before.”

Another noteworthy update that Thor3D has made to its newest release is the use of injection molded casings instead of silicon molded ones. By using injection molding for the Calibry, the 3D scanner manufacturer says it was able to drastically reduce the cost per unit of the scanner while providing a more “professional look and feel.”

To emphasize the newness of the low-cost 3D scanner—and to set it apart from its existing scanners—Thor3D has also launched a new website, logo and design scheme for the Calibry. The company is hoping to hone in on the B2C market and target small-to-medium businesses who are interested in leveraging professional 3D scanning capabilities without the hefty price tag.

The 3D scanners are available to order as of today and will begin to ship from Thor3D’s headquarters in Germany on June 3, 2019. The company says it will issue customers their money back within two weeks of purchase if they are not satisfied with the 3D scanner.
