# Discover the MIMETE alloys powering energy AM

Not many companies in the additive manufacturing industry can claim the same legacy in the energy sector as FOMAS Group. [The Italian company, first founded in 1956](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/mimete/), has been forging parts for the power generation industry for well over half a century. In fact, in 2024, the power generation market—comprising the nuclear, steam & gas, hydroelectric, geothermal, wind, and aeroderivative sectors—accounted for over half of the company’s total revenue.

This decades-long experience in energy has some notable milestones: in 1972, FOMAS Group made an impactful entry into the nuclear sector, going on to forge parts for nearly every nuclear power plant in the Western world. In the 2010s, the company played a key role in the installation of an Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR) plant, which enabled the production of high-quality steel components for applications in the nuclear and power generation markets. And eight years ago, FOMAS Group marked its entry into additive manufacturing with the production of gas atomized metal AM powders for applications in the energy industry, amongst others.

As part of this entry in AM, FOMAS Group launched a new brand of metal powders, MIMETE. This brand draws on the company’s long history and deep knowledge of metallurgy, which had previously been focused on metal forgings and rolled rings. For energy applications specifically, the company has leveraged its experience working with materials that can withstand extreme temperatures and pressures—such as carbon manganese steels, austenitic and super austenitic steels and advanced alloys with high manganese or aluminum content—to develop a portfolio of high-quality, gas atomized powders based on nickel, iron and cobalt.

## Supporting energy applications

Today, FOMAS Group offers a broad range of alloys that can meet the requirements in industries like aerospace, oil & gas and energy—we covered its aerospace-grade products in depth here. For energy application specifically, the company has a number of nickel-based powders that have the necessary temperature resistance and toughness to be used in the production of turbine blades, heat exchangers and parts that require internal cooling channels—essential in power generation systems that use controlled combustion to power generators.

The additive application of these resilient metals to energy parts can dramatically improve their resistance to wear, oxidation and high-temperature corrosion, reducing maintenance and downtimes and extending the lifespan of energy systems.

## Alloys for energy

All MIMETE powders are manufactured at a state-of-the-art facility in Biassono, just north of Milan. This powder production facility houses vacuum inert gas atomization (VIGA) capabilities for the manufacturing of metal powders with a high level of sphericity and purity. In AM terms, this translates to a printing material with excellent flowability, density and sinterability. Also in-house are post-processing solutions, like sieves, air classifiers, blenders and packaging systems, as well as a testing and quality control lab that adheres to the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard.

Here are FOMAS Group’s key alloys for energy AM applications:

## MIMETE V 718

Among the alloys geared towards energy AM applications is MIMETE V 718, a nickel-ferrous-chromium superalloy that offers a combination of excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance, high tensile strength, fatigue and creep resistance, and rupture strength. Moreover, the nickel-based metal maintains its advantageous mechanical properties even at high temperatures. These characteristics are ideal for printing critical power generation components like turbine blades, jet engine components, high-temperature fasteners, and nuclear reactor parts.

FOMAS Group, in partnership with 3D Energy, 3D printed a labyrinth cage using MIMETE V 718. By additively manufacturing this part—designed for a high-temperature gas valve for a gas plant in Africa—the partners succeeded in reducing delivery times for the spare part to just eight weeks (including design, prototyping and testing) and brought down costs by 16%.

## MIMETE V 625

This nickel-chromium superalloy also offers a set of properties that meet the demanding requirements of energy applications. These properties include excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance and maintained mechanical properties across a wide temperature range. These properties have led to the metal alloy being favored for applications that require long-term durability, such as heat exchangers, pressure vessels, turbine seals, and exhaust systems in nuclear environments.

[Notably, FOMAS Group recently introduced](https://www.voxelmatters.com/fomas-group-qualifies-mimete-v-625-nace-for-am-in-sour-and-corrosive-environments/) MIMETE V 625 NACE, a nickel-chromium superalloy engineered for sour service applications. This means the alloy has superior resistance to stress corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement. This new alloy is currently undergoing qualification by a major oil & gas company, which wants to use it to make subsea replacement parts like control valves.

## MIMETE V X

MIMETE V X is a nickel-chromium-iron-molybdenum alloy that offers excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance, particularly in aggressive atmospheres. Other properties of the metal alloy include high strength and structural stability (even at high temperatures reaching up to 1200°C), and resistance to stress-corrosion cracking and carburization. Moreover, MIMETE V X has good ductility and formability after heat treatments, which can facilitate machining and welding. All these properties make for a versatile metal AM powder, particularly for high-temperature applications, such as gas turbine components, nuclear reactor parts, and chemical processing equipment.

## MIMETE N 75

Last but not least, FOMAS Group’s MIMETE N 75 is a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy that has a unique combination of properties that appeal to both the energy sector and biomedical sector (e.g. medical implants and dental applications). These properties include high strength, excellent wear and corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, high-temperature resistance, and durability. In the energy sector, where the alloy’s high-temperature resistance is a big selling point, the material is used for industrial gas turbines and steam generator components, turbine rotors, blades, nozzles and more. FOMAS highlights MIMETE N 75’s use for industrial gas turbines and steam generators, as the material can contribute to increased part longevity, reliability and efficiency.

Ultimately, with the right materials at their disposal, manufacturers in the energy sector can maximize the potential of additive manufacturing technologies, producing complex parts optimized for performance and efficiency, minimizing material waste, and decreasing turnaround times for both new products and replacement parts.
