The mission to bring cultured meat to the dinner table has moved a tangible step closer with the official opening of The Chicken – the world’s first restaurant experience that offers the opportunity to eat meat grown directly from chicken cells. Although this operation is not directly linked with 3D printing, 3dpbm covers cellular agriculture stories (as we do EV and rocket launch stories) because these areas are prime candidates for 3D printing adoption as they continue to evolve.

Opened by food tech company SuperMeat, in the town of Ness Ziona near Tel Aviv (in the area adjacent to where several major 3D printing companies are located, including Stratasys and XJet) The Chicken marks a significant milestone for the cultured meat industry, addressing the three key challenges for commercialization: a scalable manufacturing process; a clear path to cost parity with conventional meat, and the production of high-quality and nutritious chicken products that taste incredible (that’s according to the company, however judging by the photos we have no real reason to doubt them).

Selected guests at The Chicken will be able to reserve a table and see the manufacturing plant from their seats and enjoy a restaurant experience on-premise, eating burgers made from chicken produced under the same roof.

SuperMeat aims to bring the world the highest quality chicken meat, grown directly from cells, in a sustainable and animal-friendly process. With the world’s demand for meat projected to double by 2050 , cultured meat offers an innovative food system that will provide nutritional security, drastically reduce carbon emissions, and increase food safety worldwide.

“The launch of The Chicken is an important step toward a world where cultured meat is accessible to everyone. There is strong public demand for transparency of how food comes to the table. We’re proud to share the full story of SuperMeat chicken for the first time —offering production and dinner all under the same roof, from our plant to your fork,” said Ido Savir, CEO, SuperMeat.

Having developed a manufacturing process for cultured chicken meat, SuperMeat is now looking for partners in the food and ingredient sourcing industries around the world to work together.
