# Tesseract Technologies is targeting LFAM precision with linear motors

Dutch startup [Tesseract Technologies](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/tesseract-technologies/) has made the list of finalists for the [Formnext Awards](https://www.voxelmatters.com/finalists-formext-awards-2025/) in the Rookie category for its linear motors that can be integrated into large-format FDM 3D printers, offering superior precision, speed and reliability than more conventional belt drives.

While belt drives are common and perfectly functional in desktop FDM 3D printers, they can start to present challenges as the technology scales up. That is, as belts get longer to account for larger build envelopes, issues like stretch, vibrations and wear can all start to influence the quality, speed and reliability of the printing process. In order to address these issues and improve large-format FDM's overall performance, a team based out of the Netherlands founded Tesseract Technologies, which has introduced a "new generation of linear motors" that can replace belt drives in large 3D printers.

The linear motors developed by Tesseract are engineered specifically for 3D printing and promise enhanced functionality without the hefty price tag typically associated with standard linear motors (in the range of thousands of dollars for a single motor). According to the young company, it has actually managed to cut the cost of linear motors by up to ten times, a feat achieved by building their linear motors "from the ground up" using cost-efficient components.

Linear motors offer a superior performance to belt drives—particularly in larger systems—due to their frictionless nature. Rather than a belt and stepper motors, linear motors use a magnetic rail to move the carriage, enabling smooth and precise motion. In Tesseract's highly adaptable linear motor solution, the system comprises a stator, the stationary rail that contains magnets, and a rotor, which interacts with the magnetic field and moves. The precision of its motors is owed in large part to its magnetic encoder, which offers 0.5-micrometer accuracy and shares positional data with the closed-loop controller board. Notably, each stator is custom made by Tesseract to fit the exact dimensions and specifications of the customer's 3D printer.

Tesseract Technologies is currently piloting its linear motors with a number of 3D printer manufacturers and has high hopes for its accessible linear motors. As the company says: "Our ambition is clear: to accelerate the shift from traditional to additive manufacturing by making high-performance linear motion technology accessible to every 3D printer maker."

You can can learn more about Tesseract's solution and see its linear motors first hand at the Startup Area at Formnext 2025 (Hall 11.0, booth D62A). As we said, Tesseract's linear motors are nominated in the Rookie Award category along with 3DMyMask, which makes custom silicone masks for premature infants; and [Fidentis GmbH](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/fidentis/), which has developed the [first commercial multi-material additive manufacturing solution](https://www.voxelmatters.com/fidentis-debuts-clinically-used-multi-material-lpbf-dental-implant/amp/) for dental technology.
