# TCT Asia 2026 field report: the China you think you know

TCT Asia 2026 brought 550+ exhibitors and 44,519 unique visitors to Shanghai's National Exhibition and Convention Center — a 42% increase year-on-year, with international attendance up 50%. This is just part of the story. For anyone trying to genuinely understand what is happening in China's additive manufacturing industry, there is a structural problem that most global AM professionals are overlooking. The energy that fills 55,000 square meters of show floor, the signals scattered across exhibition booths, the information that never reaches global media — none of this is visible from the outside. This is that report, and an explanation of why we take this show seriously.

## TCT Asia 2026 by the numbers

Now in its 12th edition, TCT Asia occupied Halls 7.1 (Metal AM) and 8.1 (Polymer & Non-Metal AM) at Shanghai's NECC — a combined footprint more than four times the size of TCT Japan, which featured around 130 booths at its January edition in Tokyo. Of the visitors, 66.8% were professional buyers with active purchasing needs, and 14.08% came with budgets exceeding $5 million. TCT Asia is not merely a place to gather information. It is where business gets done.

This year's theme was "Empowering Asia · Connecting the World." More than 100 forums and conferences ran alongside the exhibition, spanning the TCT Asia Summit (aerospace, healthcare, consumer goods, industrial manufacturing), the Insight Stage Series (global trends, international expansion strategy), the LabTec Bio3D Forum (biomaterials, in partnership with the Chinese Society for Biomaterials), and the Tech Stage (universities and research institutions). The energy of the venue extended well beyond the show floor.

## TCT Asia 2026 from the show floor

The first thing that hits you when you walk onto the show floor is the scale. But what registers almost immediately after is something harder to quantify: the energy. The pressure to close deals that permeates Japanese trade shows is simply absent. In its place is something closer to a festival — excitement, noise, and genuine enthusiasm filling every corner of the venue.

Metal AM (Hall 7.1) made it clear that the era of competing on machine specs alone is over. Laser counts and build volumes are no longer sufficient differentiators. Companies were selling a vision of how metal AM integrates into the factory floor as a complete production system.

BLT's BRIGHTENLINES automated production line—integrating eight printers with powder circulation, material handling, substrate removal, and waste recovery—is a manufacturing cell, not a collection of machines. Eplus3D's teaser of the EP-M3050, configurable with up to 256 lasers, came alongside a production case study involving titanium alloy hinge covers for Honor foldable smartphones — a direct signal that the pitch has shifted from "we can print this" to "we can produce this at volume, at a cost that makes sense." The collaboration between LEAP 71, Farsoon, and HBD — resulting in an AI-designed aerospike rocket engine printed over 289 continuous hours — was proof that the manufacturing infrastructure now exists to realize geometries that no human engineer would draw.

On the software side, serious deployment of metal AM in production environments demands far more than design tools — process simulation, distortion prediction, and quality verification software are all essential parts of the stack. Siemens NX had a notable presence on the show floor, but credible Chinese players in this space were conspicuously absent. What this means requires careful interpretation. It may reflect continued dependence on Western software. It may equally reflect Chinese development efforts that have not yet surfaced publicly. Either way, for a metal AM hardware ecosystem that is making its presence felt globally, the software stack remains the next thing worth watching.

Polymer AM (Hall 8.1) told its story through the sheer breadth of who showed up. Influencers from across Asia and beyond were live-streaming from every corner of the hall throughout all three days. Engineers, procurement managers, and general consumers shared the same space, with consumer-oriented machines sitting alongside industrial systems.

In Western AM markets, aerospace, defense, and medical applications drive the industry — high-value, heavily regulated, and relatively narrow. Hall 8.1 at TCT Asia 2026 showcased sports shoes, figurines, automotive components and architectural models — civilian applications in sectors where regulatory barriers are low, and China's AM industry is growing. Bambu Lab arrived having crossed 10 billion RMB (approximately $1.4 billion USD) in annual revenue—an unprecedented milestone in the history of desktop 3D printing—and announced further ecosystem expansion. Creality unveiled Filastudio, a closed-loop filament-recycling system designed to achieve material self-sufficiency. Snapmaker brought the U1, the most-funded 3D printer in Kickstarter history at $20.61 million. The lineup itself is evidence of how decisively China's polymer AM sector is making its mark on global manufacturing, in both volume and pace.

Materials offered one of the show's most instructive contrasts. Both China's Avimetal and Japan's JX Advanced Metals are pursuing the same goal: enabling high-density copper AM without a green laser. But their strategies could not be more different. Avimetal—backed by 300 tonnes per year of production capacity and tight integration with its own printer lineup—is positioning its MT-CuCrZr powder as part of a complete manufacturing system, with scale and cost efficiency as the primary pitch. The approach targets volume production. JX Advanced Metals, by contrast, developed its surface-treated copper powder in collaboration with UK-based Alloyed and sells it as a standalone material compatible with any L-PBF system. Electrical conductivity of 99% IACS or above, no post-build heat treatment, premium positioning for EV inverter cooling and AI server heat management. JX's strategy is built around high-value, low-volume applications where precision matters more than price. Basically, it is a matter of scale versus differentiation. The contrast is a microcosm of how China and Japan are approaching AM strategy more broadly—and a reminder that there is more than one way to win in a market that is still taking shape.

Generative AI arrived at TCT Asia 2026 with something to prove. Meshy AI and Tripo AI chose a manufacturing trade show—not a software or gaming event—as their primary stage, and that choice was deliberate. The pipeline they are building—generate from text or image, validate for manufacturability and send directly to the printer — remains a work in progress. The direction is clear, and the industry is not dismissing generative AI. It is working out where and how to use it in production workflows.

3D scanners followed a consistent theme. Multiple manufacturers exhibited robotic-arm-integrated automatic scanning systems, shifting the conversation away from handheld device capabilities toward how scanning fits into a complete manufacturing workflow. The message—that competitiveness requires integration into the production process, not standalone functionality—echoed exactly what was being said in the metal AM hall.

## Information gaps and barriers

When global AM professionals try to follow China's AM industry, the first obstacle they encounter is not just a lack of information. It is that the information is elsewhere.

Open the corporate website of a major Chinese AM manufacturer. The news section is sparse — in many cases, last updated months ago. Major product launches and funding announcements do make it into the global media. But day-to-day developments, technical progress, market moves — most of this is published on WeChat and other Chinese social media platforms, in Chinese. No press releases. These platforms are the primary information source that industry insiders in China check every day. They barely register on the radar of global media.

The result is predictable. The "Chinese AM" that Western AM media reports on is skewed toward companies that issue English-language press releases or exhibit at international trade shows. Everything else — and there is a great deal of it — effectively does not exist for a global audience.

At TCT Asia 2026, this structural asymmetry was impossible to ignore. Products on display at booths were not present on any website. Technologies were being quietly tested in public for the first time, without any official announcement. The next moves of companies were shared only in conversation, on the show floor. Without being there, none of it exists.

One concrete example. QUBEA—a Chinese manufacturer known for its industrial SLA systems—was quietly exhibiting a prototype photopolymer printer built on an FDM-like deposition approach, entirely unlike its existing product line. No official announcement. Nothing on the web, nothing on social media. It was only through a direct conversation at the booth that we learned the company is preparing for a Kickstarter campaign later this summer. This kind of information cannot be found. It has to be encountered.

This is not a problem unique to AM. But as China's AM market expands rapidly and begins to directly reshape global competitive dynamics, the cost of this information gap grows larger every year.

## Three choices to pay attention to

China's AM industry is no longer an emerging market worth watching. It is a force that is actively redrawing the competitive structure of the global AM industry. For global AM professionals, the options ultimately come down to three.

**Ignore it.** This means conceding the market. China is one of the largest AM markets in the world, and its growth rate has no peer. Ignoring this basically means pulling back from future growth opportunities.

**Collaborate.** This means sharing — combining Chinese manufacturing capacity and cost competitiveness with your own technology and brand. Formlabs, which manufactures its machines in China, established a new office in Shenzhen — more than doubling its presence in the region. HP has explicitly positioned China as a priority growth market for its Metal Jet technology, with Shenzhen at the center of its expansion. These are not peripheral moves. Deciding how much to share, and on what terms, requires careful design — but the direction of travel is clear for companies that have chosen this path.

**Compete.** This means going after the market directly—entering China, or defending the markets that Chinese manufacturers are moving into. Either way, you cannot compete with someone you do not understand.

The segments where Western AM is currently protected are those with high regulatory and security barriers: aerospace, defense and medical. Outside of those — automotive, consumer goods, construction, sports—the walls are lower, and Chinese manufacturers are already moving in.

What enables that movement to happen faster than comparable expansions from other countries is the overseas Chinese community. Where companies from other nations must build market presence from scratch, Chinese firms can leverage networks of overseas Chinese already embedded in local business communities worldwide. This is not a minor advantage and it represents a structural asymmetry. The information flowing through Chinese social media in Chinese is being converted into local business through these networks — a pipeline that global media cannot see.

Whichever of the three options you choose, the prerequisite is the same: an accurate understanding of what is actually happening in China's AM industry. For that, there is no better starting point than TCT Asia.

## "增材制造"

When global AM professionals say they know China's AM industry, they are most often describing the part of it that publishes in English, which is to say, a fraction of what is actually happening. The daily intelligence flowing through WeChat and other Chinese social media platforms, the signals that only reveal themselves on a show floor, the next moves that are shared only in conversation—none of this reaches global media.

China is no longer a market to be ignored or a player to be dismissed. Whether you choose to ignore it, collaborate, or compete, strategy without accurate information is not strategy at all.
