Engineer and special FX expert Adam Savage recently got up close with the one-of-a-kind 3D-printed endoskeleton that New Zealand based special FX studio Weta Workshop made for the upcoming Ghost in the Shell movie. Chatting with Weta Workshop technician Jared Haley in the studio’s 3D modeling room, Adam learned about the experimentation and prototyping necessary to make this amazing prop, which is made of several hundred individual pieces.

The parts were first designed in CAD and then 3D printed using several different types of materials and 3D printing technologies, including direct metal 3D printing to give strength to internal joints. Ever since the pioneering work done by Legacy Effects, 3D printing is becoming a major asset for special effects studios, as blockbuster movies are now shifting from purely CG based effects to more realistic “physical effects”, which often involve advanced robotics and high-end rapid manufacturing.
