SyFy Pushes 3D Printing with New 12 Monkeys 3D Models on Thingiverse

Since it was launched at the beginning of 2016, SyFy Channel’s Thingiverse page has grown to offer 42 3D printable models from its TV properties, including The Expanse, 12 Monkeys and the Killjoys. Not so many: this perfectly reflects that status of “consumer 3D printing” as still a seed with great potential. During the airing of 12 Monkeys Season 3 Event, viewers who owned a 3D printer were urged to download models (in particular the mask from the show’s villain, known as “The Witness” from the Channel’s Thingiverse account.

The Thingiverse SyFy account is the result of Syfy Labs. It’s a think tank devoted to creating immersive, multi-platform content and experiences for existing and emerging platforms. Translation? Cool stuff for cool shows. From virtual reality to 3D printing, second screen experiences and Internet of Things integrations, and that’s just what we’re getting started with; there’s tons of exciting things in the pipeline. Here’s a short list:

3D Printing: SyFy partnered up with MakerBot, one of the industry’s leading innovators in 3D printing, to offer printable files of exclusive 3D models via MakerBot’s Thingiverse, the Internet’s largest 3D printing community. These included a few of the amazing spacecrafts from The Expanse (the author mentions 3D printing quite often in the books that the series is based on – although he just refers to it as “printing”). Those who have a 3D printer can 3D print official SyFy toys. Clearly the limits of current low cost 3D printers make this option viable to just a very small group of viewers.

Virtual Reality: Over the Summer SyFy released the iOS and Android Google Cardboard-enabled versions of The Expanse VR app, which lets you explore the vessels of The Expanse in glorious 3D renderings. And coming soon, as in this month soon, they’re going to release The Expanse VR app for Samsung Gear VR.

Hue/Sync: Continuing in 2016, SyFy is expanding its Hue with Sync offerings. Sync up The Expanse, 12 Monkeys or Sharnado 4 with Syfy Sync, and if you have Phillips Hue Lightbulbs in your home you can watch with immersive, custom lighting tracks. Think about your whole room turning blood red in response to a shark bite.
