Supertoys Supertoys, the Rotterdam-based Dutch-German design duo formed by Merle Flügge and Job Mouwen, presents its 3D printed Starfish terrazzo floor piece at Masterly (the space dedicated to Dutch designers) during the Salone del Mobile/Fuorisalone in Milan (September 5 – 10, 2021). The piece was created using large-format AM technology from Aectual.

With its soft rounded shapes and popping hues, the design hints at coral and candy: “We wanted to create something that brings some magic to the interior” the duo stated. “We love how this object transforms the floor, into literally a 5th wall, as an art display”. The 3D printed Starfish can be used as an accent object on the floor but can also be attached to the wall. The design pattern can also be integrated as a centerpiece in an entire terrazzo floor.

Aectual X Durabella pattern terrazzo flooring is a collaboration between Durabella, which brings the world’s first carbon-neutral terrazzo flooring based on bio-based resin and real marble stones, and Aectual’s bio-based 3D printing technology. The floor integrates 3D printed patterns with a terrazzo infill. It comes with a red list-free certificate, meaning it doesn’t contain any elements known to pose risks to human health. It is also 100% volatile organic compound (VOC)-free and 100% recyclable.

Aectual X Durabella pattern terrazzo offers endless design opportunities to integrate storytelling in flooring design. The 3D printed floor patterns are entirely customizable and enable designers to create their own unique signature, integrate wayfinding, highlight specific points of interest, and use design to create a sense of place.

The Starfish piece combines popping pink-purple resin with Thassos and Foxite marble stones. The object is created custom on-demand, and it comes in a standard size of 180 cm diameter (70,86 inch). Larger sizes upon request. The Starfish piece can also be integrated as a recurring pattern in an Aectual X Durabella pattern terrazzo floor, where the sizes of the Starfish are made to fit the floorplan.

Supertoys Supertoys: “We like how the design becomes a centerpiece in the room, similar to the historical terrazzo flooring that you see in so many Milanese Palazzo’s. It is great to see our Starfish come alive for the first time here in the Palazzo Francesco Turati during Masterly Milan”.
