Over the years, Sözer's use of 3D printing has evolved in tandem with the maturing technology, culminating in a sophisticated, highly automated workflow that has delivered faster production rates and all but eliminated errors. Sercan Sözer, Director of Design and Product Development at the family-owned company, explained how its use of 3D printing has transitioned over the years: "We’ve been using 3D printing technology for 18 years. Initially, we used traditional methods, such as wax masters and rubber molds for casting. However, ten years ago, we moved to direct casting from 3D printed wax models [AM] enables us to print unique designs with speed, accuracy, and creativity." Available in a variety of different styles, the gold chain has a strong link to 3D printing, as the technology has enabled Sözer to realize more complex structures, including hollow chains that can be cast in a single piece. However, despite the benefits offered by 3D printing compared to more conventional jewelry-making processes, which require extensive assembly for chains, Sözer found itself facing some workflow issues. For instance, the 3D printing workflow still required Sözer's team to check and optimize design files regularly, which resulted in a laborious, ad-hoc process that was prone to errors. As Sözer said: "Every change had to be done manually, one file at a time." While this was manageable at smaller scales, the success of products like the Monaco Chain has led to the company to find a more scalable and reliable solution. According to the jewelry company, reinforcing its 3D printing processes with Materialise's automation software has unlocked unprecedented productivity, minimizing file errors by 90% and speeding up production by 70%. From a labor perspective, Sözer estimates that Magics SDK saves the company "about 1.5 full-time employees' worth of manual work."
