# SHINING 3D scanning helps Hyunion cut sheet metal inspection costs

Liuzhou Hyunion Automotive Components, a subsidiary of Hyunion Holding Co., Ltd. and a Tier-1 supplier to SAIC-GM-Wuling, has replaced part of its fixture-based quality checks with 3D scanning equipment from [SHINING 3D](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/shining-3d/).

The Chinese manufacturer produces body stampings, welded assemblies, sheet metal parts, and trim components for the automotive sector.

## Fixture-based checks carry a cost

Sheet metal parts are thin, prone to deforming, and made in a wide range of shapes, with hole positions, trimmed edges, and how closely a finished part matches its design dimensions among the features that matter most during inspection. 

Checking those features by hand traditionally calls for a dedicated fixture built to match each part's geometry, paired with clamps, gauges, and inspection pins. SHINING 3D noted that these fixtures are costly and slow to produce, and because each one is built for a single part number, they cannot easily be reused across a product line.

## Scanning in place of custom tooling

Hyunion now captures a full digital model of each stamped part using non-contact optical scanning, then checks holes, edges, dimensions, and tolerances against that model in one pass rather than relying on a matched fixture. 

Parts can be held in place with basic rests or clamps instead of custom-built replicas, and, according to SHINING 3D, a single scanning setup can then move between part numbers with a change of holding fixture. The company reported that this cuts tooling costs, shortens the time needed to prepare each inspection job, and has moved Hyunion's quality checks toward a more digitized process.
