Like any manufacturing process, additive manufacturing does not begin and end with the 3D printer. The printing process itself is only one step in the AM workflow, which can also include design and simulation prior to printing and post-processing and inspection after printing. In many industries, inspection is a critical part of the AM process, in which printed parts are measured, verified and deemed up to standard. To facilitate the inspection of 3D printed parts, Chinese AM and 3D scanning expert SHINING 3D has developed and launched a handy desktop inspection system: the AutoScan Inspec.

The AutoScan Inspec is an Automatic Desktop 3D Inspection Scanner that is capable of one-click, high-accuracy 3D scanning and 3D inspection, so manufacturers can verify parts more easily than using manual inspection systems. The system is designed for scanning small and complexly designed parts and offers metrology-grade accuracy.

The new inspection system integrates dual high-resolution cameras with 5 mega pixel capability and an advanced blue-light 3D scanning technology that has an accuracy within 10μm. Combined with a 3-axis multi-angle scanning platform, the AutoScan Inspec system enables users to easily capture highly detailed 3D scans of their printed parts, which can then be analyzed against the original 3D model for accuracy.

The scanning hardware is powered by SHINING 3D’s Ultrascan software, which was developed with user-friendliness in mind. The software platform has an intuitive interface and simplifies the 3D data export process to mainstream CAD/CAM systems like Geomagic Control X, Design X, Zbrush, Polyworks and others.

The inspection system has a scanning area of 100 x 100 x 75 mm and weighs just 7.5 kg, meaning it can be installed in virtually any manufacturing or office environment. SHINING 3D says the new non-contact measurement system has applications in inspection and quality control, as well as in reverse engineering, product design and more.

To demonstrate the ease of its new system, SHINING 3D scanned an impeller component. The scanning process was complete in just three minutes, and the subsequent inspection process—including a full Geomagic Control X report—was complete within 10 minutes.
