# Scrap Labs debuts Scrap 1 LPBF metal 3D printer at $9,600 entry-level price

[Scrap Labs](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/scrap-labs/) debuted its first product, the Scrap 1 LPBF metal 3D printer, at the Rocky Mountain RepRap Festival (RMRRF) in Loveland, Colorado, on April 18–19, 2026.

The Boulder-based company opened pre-orders for the Scrap 1 ahead of the event. Kit configurations started at $9,600 under an early-bird pricing structure valid through April 19, 2026, after which kit pricing rises to $14,990. Fully assembled and tested units start at $17,990. Shipments are estimated to begin in early 2027.

## Designed for access

The Scrap 1 is a benchtop-sized system. Its architecture integrates laser control, thermal stability, motion precision, and process tuning as a unified engineering problem rather than treating each as an independent subsystem. The printer operates at a 30-micron (0.03 mm) layer thickness, with closed-loop XY positioning and a focused spot size of 135 microns (0.135 mm).

Software control is available via a browser-based interface compatible with ScrapSlicer, PrusaSlicer, and OrcaSlicer. The system supports modular assembly, tool-less removal of the build platform, and rapid material changes to reduce downtime between jobs.

The machine was built around repeatable process control for functional metal parts, not novelty applications. It is positioned as a metal printing platform built for individuals, research labs, and manufacturers seeking ownership and direct access to the hardware. The company stated the system was designed to be transparent and serviceable, with an open architecture intended to allow users to modify and evolve the tool over time.

## From aerospace metal AM to you

Scrap Labs was founded by Matt Woods, an engineer with more than a decade of experience in metal additive manufacturing hardware. Woods previously printed production rocket components at SpaceX and led technical teams developing complex machines before founding Scrap Labs.

"Scrap Labs exists to put high-performance metal printing into the hands of builders who want real parts, fast iteration, and a system they can actually understand," Woods said.

The company's stated long-term vision extends to making advanced manufacturing tools accessible in off-earth environments, as part of what it described as a broader goal of enabling multi-planetary manufacturing capability.

Scrap Labs manufactures, designs, and prototypes in Colorado, with a global supporter community which central to the platform's development.

Attendees at RMRRF can visit the Scrap Labs booth to meet the team and view demo parts printed on the Scrap 1.
