Royal 3D develops ShearWater Aquatic Drone using LFAM
Addressing demand in maritime and heavy-duty applications in project partly subsidized by the EU CrossRoads program

Royal3D, an experienced company in large-scale additive manufacturing (LFAM), has entered the maritime and heavy-duty manufacturing segments using LFAM technology. The company is currently developing the ShearWater Aquatic Drone, a marine drone that could be used as a prototype for start-ups developing their own autonomous systems. Partly subsidized by the EU CrossRoads program, the drone integrates maritime AI-driven technology, 3D printing, and innovations to redefine both human and wildlife safety and efficiency in port inspections and maritime operations.
The ShearWater drone is printed using recycled and recyclable materials while remaining lightweight and impact resistant. During the 3D printing process, the drone has integrated Royal3D’s IP knowledge. The company is ready to lend its expertise in design, engineering, and production, thus allowing companies to integrate their systems for the drone’s specific purpose.
With over 10 years of industry experience, Royal3D has built a reputation for delivering high-quality, durable and sustainable components designed for maritime and industrial applications. The company specializes in producing large-scale, high-performance components such as transport cradles, structural elements, and customized industrial parts, owning two of the largest printers in Europe. Additionally, Royal3D is committed to sustainability, utilizing recycled and recyclable materials to reduce environmental impact and promote a more sustainable approach to manufacturing.
“What sets Royal3D apart is our ability to adapt advanced 3D printing technologies for industries like maritime and heavy-duty manufacturing, where the demands on strength and durability are unparalleled,” says Fulko Roos, Founder of Royal3D and Royal Roos. “At the same time, our expertise in urban design and architectural applications continues to deliver innovative solutions across diverse sectors.”

While Royal3D remains a trusted partner for interior and exterior design and urban applications, this renewed focus on maritime and industrial manufacturing pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in large-scale additive manufacturing. As Royal3D continues to expand its capacity for large-scale printing, it is reshaping how industries approach production, material efficiency, and design capabilities—unlocking a new frontier for the 3D printing industry.
