# Marker-free Revopoint Trackit 3D scanner now on Kickstarter

3D scanning and 3D printing have gone together since their earliest days. The symbiotic relationship between the two makes perfect sense: 3D scanners capture three-dimensional shapes using light to create a 3D model while 3D printers can then recreate those 3D models in physical form; 3D scanning also plays an important role in quality control, comparing 3D prints to their digital models for dimensional accuracy checks. In recent years, both technologies have evolved tremendously, benefiting from technological advances and innovations that have brought down cost barriers and facilitated accessibility. The latest innovation on the 3D scanning side comes from [Revopoint](https://revo.ink/l-trackit-vm), a company founded by a team of doctors from Xi’an Jiaotong University, MIT and Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The 3D scanning company has just launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for the new[ Revopoint Trackit](https://revo.ink/l-trackit-vm), an optical tracking and blue laser 3D scanning solution ideal for industrial applications. Among the key features that set Revopoint Trackit apart from existing 3D scanners is its ability to accurately scan objects without the need for markers.

## Accelerated scanning workflow

Those familiar with the steps involved in capturing a 3D scan using existing 3D scanning systems will know how time-consuming placing markers on objects can be. Not only that, but placing the reference points onto 3D scanning subjects can be particularly tricky for intricately angled geometries or small parts with fine features. Now, however, users can benefit from marker-free 3D scanning and easily capture detailed 3D data on anything from small components, like a coin, to workpieces measuring up to six meters in size.

This capability is enabled by Revopoint Trackit’s intelligent tracking technology, which optically tracks the scanner’s spatial movement in real time. An automated gimbal calibration system ensures the high accuracy of the scan data (0.02 mm) and is up to 50% faster than manual calibration on competing scanners.

(It’s also worth mentioning here that the Revopoint Trackit Tracking 3D Scanner can be used as a standalone handheld 3D scanner—a particularly useful function when parts have features difficult to access using the tracking base station. In this case, users should use markers.)

## Versatile scanning applications

As mentioned, the Revopoint Trackit 3D scanner can be used to capture objects in a range of sizes with high accuracy. The scanning solution consists of a dual-camera optical tracking base station that has a 4 m working distance and can be easily repositioned for surface coverage up to 2.8 x 2.8 m.

But size isn’t the only way that the new 3D scanner excels in versatility. Revopoint has integrated dual scanning modes, which users can easily switch between. The dual modes are:

-     30-Line Cross Blue Laser Mode, which is ideal for rapidly scanning surface areas including dark or shiny surfaces.
-     Single-Line Mode, which can capture complex or typically challenging features, like holes or deep crevices, with a high level of accuracy.

“Trackit nailed a complex brake shaft with exceptional detail,” explains Johnathan Mitchelson, an R&D technician and mechanical engineer. “I captured the exterior using the 30 cross-line mode, then switched to the single-line mode for the deep keyways—all without markers or spray. Three-click auto-calibration, watertight mesh and I'm ready for reverse engineering and future upgrades. It's a game-changer."

The company also adds that the scanning software that accompanies the Revopoint Trackit enables users to select different scanning parameters based on the surface of the object. For example, a shiny metal part will require a different scanning profile than a standard matte component. Similarly, if a component has a dark section, users can change the depth exposure when the scanning reaches the dark part of the part (or alternatively opt to use the Black Object scanning mode for the entire project).

To illustrate the versatility of the 3D scanner, Revopoint has highlighted a number of potential applications. In demanding industries like aerospace, for instance, Trackit can increase the precision of reverse engineering for parts like turbine blades and engine assemblies. In automotive, the scanner can capture data (even on shiny metallic surfaces) to enhance part repair and replacement part production in combination with 3D printing technologies. Other application areas that can benefit from Revopoint’s technology are the arts and restoration, mold casting and quality control.
