RetroPixel toy soldiers dance on Prusa 3D printer to celebrate upcoming videogame

To celebrate finishing the Green Hawk Platoon Cinematic trailer, RetroPixel Digital Inc., the software house behind it, decided to create an entirely new animated short as a shout-out to partners, including Prusa, the 3D printer maker. The trailer shows the toy soldiers from the game dancing on the bed of an MK4 Prusa 3D printer, which is also being used to create motion capture props. The game, published by none other than Microprose, is a nostalgic throw back to toy solder battles from the 1980s but also a perfect example of how video games and 3D printing can help each other.

RetroPixel Digital is an independent video game development company based in Vancouver, BC. They create video games and original digital animation content for YouTube, Amazon, Netflix and other platforms. Focusing mostly on their own content, they write, plan, shoot, edit and ultimately produce all of our own stuff in house. This gives the team more opportunity to channel their inner creativity and enjoy their jobs more.

MicroProse picked up the publication of Green Hawk Platoon. Playing MicroProse games as kids adds to that nostalgic feeling that the developers were so desperately chasing with this whole game. The collaboration with Prusa Research goes beyond some basic prototyping in the real world. It also extends to the virtual world, where gamers will be seeing – and seriously interacting with – some of the MK4 printers in the game.

Toe celebrate the collaboration, Prusa sent RetroPixel a little care package, including an MK4, some filament and, of course, Haribo gummies. Ethan (the little guy who inspired the game’s main protagonist) was the first object to be 3D printed right after unboxing the unit. RetroPixel Digital promises more amazing projects involving Prusa 3D printing on the way, including 3D printed motion capture props for use with Movella Xsens and MANUS digital tools setup.
