Resolution Medical, a Minneapolis-based company specializing in innovative solutions for the medical device industry, recently partnered with 3D printing company Carbon to adopt its AM technology. Through the agreement, Resolution Medical has become Carbon’s first production partner in the Midwest dedicated to the medical device market.

At this stage in the partnership, Resolution Medical has ordered three Carbon M2 3D printers, which it will leverage to design, engineer, manufacture and supply end-use parts for medical devices. Carbon’s proprietary technology, Digital Light Synthesis, will enable the medical company to increase its production capabilities while also exploiting the design and manufacturing freedom afforded by AM.

It goes almost without saying, but working with Carbon’s 3D printers, Resolution Medical will print parts using supported biocompatible materials. Presently, Carbon offers the following biocompatible materials: Medical Polyurethane and silicone (as well as some other materials which have undergone some degree of biocompatibility testing).

“With the high density of medical device companies in the area, this state-of-the-art technology is not only important for us, but the local industry as a whole,” commented Shawn Patterson, Founder and President of Resolution Medical, referencing the medical device innovation in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis–Saint Paul).

“Our goal is to deliver true, scalable digital fabrication across the globe, enabling engineers to design and manufacture previously unmakeable products both economically and at scale,” added Dana McCallum, Head of Production Partnerships at Carbon. “Resolution Medical has a strong reputation for engineering excellence in the medical device industry, and we are thrilled to have them as a certified Carbon production partner.”

Silicon Valley-based Carbon launched its M2 3D printer in Spring of 2017. The machine, built for integration into its SpeedCell production system, boasts a build volume double the size of its predecessor (the M1) but with the same high resolution printing (75 µm) and isotropic qualities.

Resolution Medical, for its part, recently moved into a new 36,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Minneapolis. The new facility (soon to be equipped with Carbon’s M2 machines) will enable the company to meet growing demands for new and innovative medical devices.
