Industrial CT analysis software company Volume Graphics recently signed a multi-year Official Supplier agreement with Renault F1 Team in order to advance the use of its non-destructive testing tools to inspect 3D printed automotive racing components. Renault F1 Team will use the company’s VGSTUDIO MAX solution to test parts for its Formula One single seater with more efficiency and reliability.

Volume Graphics highlighted its software offering last week at Formnext, where it emphasized the importance of inspection and quality control for additive manufacturing. In the context of motorsports especially, having reliable, safe and qualified parts is of the utmost importance.

“Safety and reliability cannot be negotiated in our world and this new partnership gives us the confidence we need to push the boundaries of innovation in both chassis and engine design,” explained Nick Chester, Chassis Technical Director at Renault F1 Team. “Having Volume Graphics alongside us creates a dynamic approach to projects relating to non-destructive testing and metrology processes within Renault F1 Team.”

The VGSTUDIO MAX solution gives users the ability to identify 3D printing defects, as well as to analyze raw 3D printing materials, verify melt pool environments and compare final prints to CT data. The software can also conduct dimensional metrology and defect analysis on the 3D printed component.

“Industrial CT is perfect for quality control in additive manufacturing,” added Karl-Michael Nigge, Chief Product Officer at Volume Graphics. “No matter how complex the shape may be, with CT and Volume Graphics software, users can inspect their additive-manufactured components comprehensively. Our VGSTUDIO MAX software is the tool for measuring part geometry and checking for internal defects to ensure quality and safety in additive manufacturing and establish efficient workflows.”

“Racing is the essence of what Volume Graphics stands for: speed, precision, and engineering excellence,” said Christof Reinhart, CEO Volume Graphics GmbH. “Our software is used daily by numerous customers around the world to inspect the most advanced and complex components. But a high-performance sport like this takes us to totally new, previously unknown limits. Overcoming these limits not only helps Renault F1 Team but all of our other customers.”

Renault F1 Team has been using Volume Graphics’ technology since 2016 and the companies have entered into various collaborations since then. The Formula One racing team has worked with other companies in the additive manufacturing industry, including Jabil.
