Wiiv steps up with mass customized, 3D printed sandals

Stay up to date with everything that is happening in the wonderful world of AM via our LinkedIn community.

The sandals that the 3D printed footwear pioneers at Wiiv just launched on Kickstarter aren’t just an innovation in footwear. It’s a revolution in an industry plagued by mass-produced products, rigid offshore supply chains, and the inability to capitalize on the full potential of 3D printing. Instead, Wiiv is presenting one-off custom products at scale and manufactured locally.

If the Kickstarter is successful (it is already past half of the $250K goal), for the first time ever, campaign supporters would be the first experience affordable custom footwear designed to fit the unique contours of their feet. Unlike the big guys, stuck on aesthetics and expensive 3D prototypes, Wiivv is making every shoe custom fit to you from the factory in San Diego, California. This could be the biggest leap in footwear since foam!

Map your feet for your Wiivv Custom Fit Sandals is possible through Wiiv’s foot capture app for iOS or Android smartphones. Wiivvs are designed for your specific feet, ensuring unparalleled comfort and improved biomechanics that no other sandal can provide. You can further personalize them as well.

“Of the 7 billion people on this planet, person to person, from left to right, your feet are unique. We believe your footwear should be too!” Wiiv.

Biomechanically designed to fit any unique feet ,Wiivs are engineered to relieve joint discomfort, foot fatigue and even plantar fasciitis. Customers can choose from four strap colors and multiple arch colors. Straps are interchangeable.

Lack of arch support can cause issues in your feet, ankles, knees, hips and lower back. Toe thongs can hurt like hell and cause blisters. Poorly-fitting straps mean sliding feet, “toe scrunch” and soreness.
Lack of cushioning means more impact on your body.

Custom fit 3D printed arches support your feet and lower body. Triple-density foam footbeds give all-day comfort. Deep, compressible heel cups absorb shock as you walk. No-rub toe thongs with custom placement based on your foot width– bye, bye blisters! Custom-fit straps hold and support your feet with every step.

Wiiv digitally maps over 200 data points on each foot. This data allows us to pinpoint your unique foot length, width and arch shape.

In less than 5 seconds this 2D data is accurately converted into 3D models of your unique arch supports, which are 3D printed at our facility in San Diego. Our adaptive manufacturing process allows us to use your foot measurement data to customize your unique toe thong and strap placements (both US patent pending) so you can experience true custom comfort.

Every pair of Wiivv Custom Fit Sandals is quality-checked and verified by biomechanical experts before being packaged and shipped right to your front door.

Wiivv prides itself in being driven by innovation and customer feedback. Its products are the result of scientific research, multiple design iterations, data gathering and rigorous product testing. The company works with leaders and experts to ensure its products are changing the footwear industry.

They leveraged experience developing Wiivv Custom Fit 3D Printed Insoles – including proprietary customization technologies, biomechanics expertise, tens of thousands of foot scans, and relentless commitment to design perfection – to create a sandal that supports personalized biomechanics.

“Traditional flat flip flops are really bad for us. That’s no secret. So we said, f*ck that. Let’s design a sandal that not only looks good, it actually supports your body’s biomechanics throughout the day. Traditional Flip Flops.” Wiiv.

Wiivv’s Science Advisory Board is made up of the following independent experts who have validated cutting-edge process and methodology. The sandals were tested for durability at the Lululemon White Space Innovation Lab and the Fortius Sport and Health Center in Vancouver, Canada. They were tested at temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius and as low as -10 degrees Celsius to ensure they can meet your needs.

The footbeds are also 100% closed-loop recyclable. You can return your sandals at the end of their lives and the material will be used to make new sandals, eliminating waste and reducing emissions. Wiivvs are 3D printed, locally assembled at the facility in San Diego, and sold directly to customers, reducing the environmental impact of shipping.

“After two years of throwing everything you can at them, your Wiivv Custom Fit Sandals will still be the most comfortable sandals you have ever worn.”

Wiivv Wants To Create New Manufacturing Jobs In Your Country
Wiivv will open a 3D manufacturing facility in any eligible country that pledges 25,000 pairs of Wiivv Custom Fit Sandals. (Eligible countries are Australia, Canada, UK, Ireland and New Zealand, and Germany) Since we already have a factory in the United States, we will need 50,000 pairs of Wiivv Custom Fit Sandals pledged from American backers in order to open a second manufacturing facility on home soil.

A Kickstarter goal of $250,000 is necessary in order to make and ship the Wiivv Custom Fit Sandals, and to produce the tooling to make them in a full range of foot sizes. Materials and manufacturing processes have already been defined.

Unlike most companies seeking funding on Kickstarter, Wiivv has a proven track record for delivering on schedule. Since the first campaign, they fulfilled orders for over 10K pairs of Wiivv Custom Fit Insoles to six different countries and are now averaging a scan-to-door turnaround time of seven days.

The Wiivv Custom Fit Sandal has gone through a year of R&D with over 50 product iterations during the process. It’s been rigorously tested. And to cover every base, Wiivv is offering a 30-day Happiness Guarantee or your money back. This means stepping up to consumer products where 3D printing is truly an asset in the production process.
