# QinetiQ delivers HMS Anson submarine parts in four weeks

When HMS Anson, a Royal Navy Astute-class submarine, required replacement components during a routine Submarine Maintenance Period (SMP) in Australia, [QinetiQ](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/qinetiq/) turned to additive manufacturing to close a supply chain gap that would ordinarily take months — or even years — to resolve.

Working across time zones, [QinetiQ's UK-based engineers](https://www.voxelmatters.com/qinetiq-flight-tests-3d-printed-titanium-aircraft-structural-component/) reverse-engineered the necessary parts before securely transferring technical data to QinetiQ Australia. A series of unnamed AM small and medium-sized enterprises in Perth, Western Australia, and on the east coast produced the majority of components locally, with QinetiQ Australia manufacturing the remainder. The entire process — from design to delivery — took four weeks.

Following approval by the Submarine Delivery Group Additive Manufacturing Team, the parts were handed over to HMS Anson's crew, who installed them at HMAS Stirling naval base near Perth.

## Billed as a milestone for AUKUS partnership

[QinetiQ claimed the operation marked the first time the Royal Navy had used advanced manufacturing to produce submarine components](https://www.voxelmatters.com/royal-navy-set-to-leverage-3d-printing-for-production-of-spare-parts/) in support of a routine SMP conducted in Australia. 

The company stated it represented a significant step toward enabling Submarine Rotational Force – West, which is a key element of AUKUS Pillar 1, the trilateral security agreement between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States that provides for the transfer of nuclear-powered [submarine technology to Australia](https://www.voxelmatters.com/royal-australian-navy-installs-metal-3d-printing-capability/).

QinetiQ has served as a longstanding strategic partner to the UK's Submarine Delivery Group, though the Australia-based application of AM for submarine maintenance marks a new operational dimension to that relationship.

“QinetiQ's global reach and established local engineering capability enabled us to move quickly to support HMS Anson in Australia,” said Corry Neale, Chief Executive of QinetiQ Australia.

“We will continue to support AUKUS Pillar 1 activities and provide opportunities to Australian companies to be part of this internationally significant, complex supply chain.”
