Montreal-based company PyroGenesis Canada Inc., a specialist in plasma waste-to-energy systems and plasma torch systems, has completed its new metal powder facility for additive manufacturing. Equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, the new facility will produce plasma atomized Ti-6Al-4V powders for the additive manufacturing market and, specifically, for the aerospace and biomedical industries.

PyroGenesis has had something of a transitional year, with the company in talks with various potential partners and clients. Though the company reported a drop in revenue from 2017 (Q2), it maintained that its future plans and discussions could provided the foundation for future growth.

With the announcement of its completed AM powder facility, it seems the Montreal-based company could be nearing the end of its transitional phase.

“We are very excited about having completed this milestone,” commented Massimo Dattilo, Vice President of PyroGenesis Additive. “It puts PyroGenesis squarely on the map as a quality supplier of Ti-6Al-4V powder for the AM industry. In parallel, we are also investigating other materials which can be produced with our other reactors, currently in our main facility.”

The new facility is equipped with a cutting edge plasma-based atomization unit, inventory storage space and logistics operations. The atomization unit reportedly integrates a number of advances and updates.

The company says that these “Step 1” innovations will reduce its capital cost significantly. The AM facility will continue to be updated and expanded, which it says will “increase yield and production rates” as they come.

“This next logical step of incorporating some of the previously announced improvements into a cutting-edge facility is now complete,” said Mr. P. Peter Pascali, President and CEO of PyroGenesis. “After investing over $2.5M into this facility, all that remains is to incorporate post treatment equipment for it to be a stand-alone facility.”

Presently, the powder facility has already achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification and PyroGenesis says it will obtain AS9100D certification for the Aviation, Space and Defense sectors by the end of the year. Once that process is complete, the company will apply for ISO 13485 certification for medical devices.

In addition to completing its state-of-the-art powder production facility, PyroGenesis is also preparing for the upcoming Formnext 2018 event, where it will be exhibiting.
