Prusa launches Buddy3D products form trusted third party suppliers

Prusa Research has built a reputation for delivering high-quality 3D printers, Prusament filaments, or software such as PrusaSlicer and Prusa Connect. This commitment to precision and reliability has become recognized by its community of users.

The Prusament filament line, for example, is entirely manufactured in-house on proprietary extrusion lines, with a team of over 135 specialists ensuring consistent precision, with some spools achieving tolerances as fine as ±0.007 mm. Furthermore, Prusament’s winding offers a level of reliability that is difficult to match. However, the surging demand for these high-quality materials has often exceeded production capacity, leaving customers frustrated when certain colors and materials quickly go out of stock.

Recognizing this challenge, Prusa has pursued multiple strategies to meet the growing demand, which reflects an overall significant increase in the adoption of filament extrusion 3D printing worldwide. This is taking place even as some filament brands are struggling, which reflects a consolidation of a maturing market into the hands of fewer leading players.

The first solution involved scaling up production capabilities. The Prusa Polymers division recently moved into a new state-of-the-art facility in Prague, just minutes from the company’s main headquarters. This upgrade includes expanded warehousing, additional extrusion lines, enhanced logistics with truck loading ramps, and advanced laboratories for research and development. These improvements not only streamline production but also accelerate the development of new materials and colors, ensuring a more consistent supply for customers.

While increasing in-house production addresses part of the issue, Prusa has also taken another important step by collaborating with carefully selected external suppliers. This collaboration has led to the launch of Buddy3D, a sub-brand that introduces an expanded range of materials and accessories. Prusa oversees the manufacturing processes for Buddy3D products, ensuring they meet the same high standards associated with the Prusa name. Unlike a budget line, Buddy3D offers high-quality third-party 3D printing accessories, which complement Prusa’s in-house offerings without compromising on reliability or performance.

Buddy3D is set to grow rapidly, offering new materials and practical accessories designed to enhance the overall 3D printing experience. This initiative underscores Prusa’s commitment to providing a comprehensive range of options for both hobbyists and professionals.

The Buddy3D brand introduces a broad selection of filaments, adding 46 new options to Prusa’s portfolio. This includes a variety of vibrant colors such as Sandstone, Rose, and Lilac, as well as specialized materials like ABS ESD and PETG MATT. These additions cater to diverse project requirements, ensuring that users can find the perfect filament for their specific needs.

Each spool of Buddy3D filament is produced with stringent quality controls, ensuring consistent color and precise winding. The accuracy of the filament diameter remains within a 0.04 mm tolerance, reflecting the same dedication to precision that defines Prusament. While Prusament remains the gold standard, Buddy3D filaments offer an excellent alternative for materials and colors not currently available in the Prusament range, including options that are otherwise challenging to source.
