# Printz collection proves that 3D printing in architectural lighting is no longer an experiment

Some products illustrate a point. Others prove one. The Printz collection of 3D printed lighting fixtures from [OCL Architectural Lighting](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/ocl-architectural-lighting/) belongs to the second category.

OCL has been operating since 1973 and holds a well-established position in the architectural lighting segment. These are luminaires that designers and architects write directly into building specifications. This is not a market that forgives experiments. Every product must meet specific standards, be repeatable in production, and perform identically across units, whether five or five hundred are ordered.

Against that backdrop, the company decided to switch to large-format 3D printing as its primary method for producing shades. Not as a novelty. Not as a pilot. As a core production process.

Traditional manufacturing has its own logic: molds, presses, and tooling. Everything is optimized for what can be made cheaply and quickly. The problem is that this logic has also been dictating what a luminaire looks like for decades. Fluid curves, organic transitions, and complex geometries are possible, but expensive. Or not possible at all.

3D printing does not know that logic. OCL prints shades directly in PETG, a material made from at least 85% post-industrial recycled content, with no molds and no tooling. Shape stops being a compromise between what looks good and what can actually be made.

The result is three models: Ola, Cosma, and Hela. Each is available in three diameters, each designed to demonstrate a different kind of formal freedom that this technology enables. But Printz is not a showcase of what a printer can do. It is a finished architectural product with a full technical specification.

And that specification is serious. Luminous output reaches up to 3,785 delivered lumens, color range spans 2700K to 4000K, and color rendering index exceeds 90 CRI with R9 above 50, which means excellent light quality even for demanding colors like red. Dimming goes down to 1% with standard 0-10V. The luminaire is also field serviceable. The diffuser threads in by hand, and both the light source assembly and the driver are field-replaceable without specialist tools.

That last point matters more than it might seem. In architectural lighting, servicing can be a serious logistical challenge. OCL solved it at the design level.

Printz also meets the requirements of the American public procurement market. It is ETL-listed for dry locations, RoHS-compliant, and Build America Buy America-ready.

David Cervantes, Product Design Manager at OCL, is straightforward about it: they started by experimenting with a process built for efficiency rather than complexity. Printz is the moment those explorations became a scalable platform.

That is the point. Not that 3D printing is new or that luminaires can look better. The point is that OCL took a technology that spent years in labs and showrooms and pushed it into the reality of commercial architectural production. With all the requirements that come with it.
