PrintParts expands 3D printing capabilities with Formlabs Fuse 1

PrintParts Inc., a New York City-based additive manufacturing service provider, is expanding its production part offerings with the addition of the Formlabs Fuse 1 selective laser sintering (SLS) system. The newly released SLS additive manufacturing system utilizes a laser to precisely fuse nylon powder into lightweight, robust parts.

Founded in 2016, PrintParts has established itself as an additive manufacturing service provider with a focus on short-run production services for industries that include aerospace, automotive, defense, robotics, and medical devices. In 2020, PrintParts significantly grew its operations to support the New York City government as a prime contractor for COVID testing supplies, ultimately delivering over 1.5 million nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs.

“We’ve always enjoyed working with the team at PrintParts and we’re very excited about the expansion into SLS production parts using the Formlabs Fuse 1 system,” said PrintParts’s customer, Barry Gottlieb, Senior Procurement Specialist of Kulicke and Soffa Industries, Inc.

After seeing growing market demand for Nylon production parts, adding the Fuse 1 system expands PrintParts’ production capacity and ability to meet customer requirements for structural, load-bearing, and mechanical parts.

“We have been using Formlabs SLA systems for over three years now and have been impressed with the ease of use, range of materials, and print quality. Investing in the new Fuse 1 system was the logical next step for us in order to bring high quality, industrial-grade SLS print options to our customers in a cost-efficient way,” says Cody Burke, Head of Partnerships at PrintParts.

PrintParts is one of the first service bureaus to offer SLS parts printed on the Fuse 1, and together with its customers will utilize the innovative features of the platform such as the production of large parts and higher throughput with a 165 x 165 x 320 mm build volume. The system also offers increased efficiency due to supportless printing minimizes post-processing time. In addition, material attributes of Nylon 12 suit structural, load-bearing, or mechanical parts, including the ability to bend and return to its original form with 11% elongation at break, 50 MPa tensile strength, and 171 °C / 340 °F @ 0.45 MPa heat deflection temperature. Continuous printing and reduction in downtime are made possible by a removable and swappable build chamber.
