# POWER WASP 45 HDP unlocks 45° printing for nautical sector

Italian 3D printer manufacturer [WASP](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/wasproject/) recently launched a new pellet 3D printer, the [POWER WASP 45 HDP](https://www.voxelmatters.com/wasp-to-live-print-coral-reef-modules-at-formnext-2024/). The large-scale machine, the latest in WASP's High-Definition Pellet (HDP) series, can print structures as long as two meters and at a 45°, two capabilities that have been particularly interesting to the nautical sector.

The POWER WASP 45 HDP integrates a new kinematic system that effectively eliminates the need for supports when printing at a 45° angle, even at a large scale. This means that users can benefit from the ability to print more complex geometries, as well as parts with greater mechanical strength and force distribution. Knock-on benefits from the minimizing of supports also include reduced post-processing, less material waste and a superior surface finish.

The pellet 3D printer is capable of processing a range of standard and technical materials, including pelletized PLA, ABS, PLA wood, PLASMIX, ASA, recycled PLA, PETG and PP, as well as loaded materials like ABS-GF. For end users, FGF platforms, such as the POWER WASP 45 HDP, can help reduce material expenses, since thermoplastic pellets are considerably cheaper than filaments. WASP points out that the new machine's material versatility is owed in part to the fact that it operates in a massive enclosed, controlled environment, with the patented FIRECAP localized hot chamber technology and Active Vacuum System.

## A nautical solution

In developing this new 3D printer, WASP engineers were driven by the needs of the nautical sector—specifically the ability to 3D print large and complex structures using technical loaded thermoplastics. [Boat makers and other nautical groups](https://www.voxelmatters.com/category/industry/marine/) have shown increasing interest in large-format 3D printing for the production of functional prototypes, molds and even end-use structures like dashboards and hulls.

Notably, the first end user to adopt the POWER WASP 45 HDP was Ferretti Yachts, an Italian maker of high-end motor yachts. ColorYacht, which supplies interior furnishings to Ferretti Yacht, has three of the HDP 3D printers at its facility that it leverages in the production of hatches, holding drawers, dashboards, seat supports and custom parts. Once printed, these various yacht components go through fairly elaborate post-processing that consists of sanding, filling and surface finishing, ensuring they meet the standards of the luxury yacht builder.

Elsewhere in the nautical industry, the POWER WASP 45 HDP has been adopted by the Polimi Sailing Team, which recently won the foiling SuMoth Challenge 2024. Ahead of the race, which took place in July, WASP collaborated with the Polimi Sailing team to develop a hull with a special focus on enhancing sustainability. The POWER WASP 45 HDP enabled the partners to directly 3D print a female mold for the hull, which eliminated the need for a sacrificial model. By directly printing the large-scale hull mold, the sailing team managed to reduce costs, turnaround times and material usage.

The 3D printing platform also enabled the team to utilize a more complex hull geometry, which reportedly improved the structure's watertight properties and thermal deformation management. For increased sustainability, the partners also opted to use filler putty instead of milling processes. Ultimately, the sailing boat prototype, the Febe, which integrated a hull made with the 3D printed mold, won the SuMoth Challenge race.

While the nautical sector is a key focus vertical for WASP and its new 3D printing platform, the company also positions the POWER WASP 45 HDP as a solution for industries like manufacturing, consumer goods and architecture—basically any sector that can benefit from the ability to print large, complex parts.
