Canadian 3D scanner company peel 3d has launched its newest product, the peel 2 3D scanner. The affordable 3D scanner—the latest generation of the company’s popular peel scanner—is equipped with three cameras and is capable of capturing full-colour scans with a high level of accuracy compared to other scanners in its price range.

The new 3D scanner offers a number of improvements over its predecessor, the peel 1, a professional 3D scanner which is currently distributed in over 30 countries. The biggest advancement is its colour-scanning capability, however the new scanner hardware also integrates two additional cameras for higher detail and higher resolution scans. Compared to the company’s first 3D scanner, which had a resolution of 0.5 mm, the peel 2 can achieve resolutions up to 0.25 mm.

In terms of applications, the company is targeting its new 3D scanner product at the art and design world as well as the medical sector. The scanner offers users the ability to capture high definition scans with accurate colouring. The scanner’s resolution also enables the capture of fine details, such as annotations and texture.

As head of the peel 3D initiative François Leclerc said: “peel 2 pushes back all technical boundaries and redefines the concept of affordable 3D scanners. It will appeal as much to artists wishing to switch over to digital as it will to medical professionals wanting to scan the human body or mechanics working with existing components. It is by far the most comprehensive entry-level scanner on the market.”

Other notable features of the new 3D scanner as a system that uses the texture of scanned objects to improve positioning accuracy and the upgraded 2.0 software, which integrates new tools and functionalities for higher quality scans.

The new 3D scanner is now available to buy for $7,490. The original peel 1 retails for $5,990. peel 3D is powered by 3D scanning specialist Creaform, which itself recently released a new 3D scanner, the Go!SCAN SPARK.
