Online lighting startup Gantri shines a light on 3D printing

Gantri and Ammunition bring to market stylish lighting for your home

Designers and design firms around the globe have expressed appreciation for the advancement of 3D printing, because of its creative potential and its accessibility in terms of production costs. One such firm is Gantri, a San Francisco-based online lighting company that leverages digital fabrication to create unique lighting products that are both design-forward and functional. Recently, Gantri teamed up with American design studio Ammunition to launch a new lighting collection consisting of 3D printed lamps and wall sconces.

The 3D printed lighting series consists of three design collections: Signal, Gio and Carve. And while they differ in style and form, each collection shares one important thing: all the lamps are 3D printed using Gantri’s custom in-house machine and are made from a plant-based material, PLA. Each collection also includes an assortment of table lamps, floor lamps and wall fixtures.

The first collection, Signal, draws inspiration from traffic lights and their traditionally circular forms. The lighting fixtures in the Signal collection are also characterized by louvered slats, which Gantri says were inspired by “the functional aspects of exterior architectural louvers used to bring light and air inside.” The slats are not only aesthetic, they also help to soften the light of the lamps.

The Gio collection, for its part, was inspired by Italian lighting designs from the 1970s and specifically those of industrial designer Gio Ponti—the namesake of the lighting series. “The unique character of the Gio Collection came to life by manipulating and rationalizing classical geometric elements so they interact with each other in playful ways,” reads Gantri’s website. “The elegant shapes connect and merge seamlessly, with a material presence and character found commonly in crafted ceramic objects.”

The soft, rounded structures of the Gio collection are interpreted in varying ways for each of the four lighting products. Notably, the Gio Task Table Light can be rotated by the user to point light in various directions.

Last but not least, the Carve collection consists of monolithic structures that evoke stone carvings. The Carve Table Light is quite versatile in that it can be placed upright to cast light onto work surfaces or on its spine to shine upwards.

3D printing has not only allowed for each of the Ammunition series’ designs to be realized, it has also enabled Gantri to achieve more ecological production compared to traditional manufacturing methods, which produce more waste.

The Ammunition series by Gantri is available in five natural colors: Carbon, Snow, Sedona Red, Forest Green and Stone. Prices range from $148 to $498. Gantri also partners with various other designers to bring their lighting ideas to life.
