Oerlikon has expanded its metal additive manufacturing capabilities by installing the AMCM M4K-4 large-bed, multi-laser metal printer at its Huntersville, North Carolina facility. This new addition strengthens the company’s ability to meet the increasing demand for complex, large-scale components, particularly in the aerospace, defense, and semiconductor industries.

Explore how Oerlikon, AMCM and Lockheed revolutionize metal additive manufacturing with the new M4K-4 multi-laser printer in North Carolina. The AMCM M4K-4 is built on the well-established EOS M400 platform and features four 1,000W lasers, allowing for efficient and precise metal part production. With a build capacity of up to 450 x 450 x 1000 mm, the system creates larger, more intricate components that were previously challenging to manufacture using traditional methods.

Oerlikon’s production site in Huntersville covers 125,000 square feet and dedicates more than 50,000 square feet to printing alone. The facility provides value to customers with capabilities that include end-to-end engineering, manufacturing, as well as a state-of-the-art research and development center. The comprehensive metallurgy lab is equipped with industry-leading technology that allows for premier powder management from the ground up and testing materials. Additionally, the company offers a wide range of post processing capabilities such as heat treatment and CNC machining.

Recently Oerlikon shifted its metal AM services focus primarily towards the US market while continuing to offer metal AM powder materials in Europe. Most AM metal powders are produced by Oerlikon Metco, which operates two state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Plymouth and Troy, located in the heart of Michigan, USA. These facilities are dedicated to producing premium metal powders specifically designed for additive manufacturing applications.

With over 85 years of experience in materials development and production, Oerlikon Metco offers a comprehensive portfolio of metal powders, each rigorously designed, tested, and manufactured to meet the exacting standards of Additive Manufacturing. The product range includes a variety of alloys, such as Nickel, Cobalt, Iron, and Titanium.

By incorporating this advanced metal 3D printing system, Oerlikon, in collaboration with Northrop Grumman, is taking a significant step forward in the field of metal additive manufacturing. This investment reflects a commitment to innovation and technological advancement, ensuring the company remains at the forefront of industrial-scale 3D printing. The enhanced capabilities provided by the AMCM M4K-4 will enable Oerlikon to offer high-quality, reliable solutions for industries that demand precision and performance in their manufacturing processes.
