# NORDYN is flying high on decentralized drone manufacturing

In a quiet industrial area near the border of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, [NORDYN Group, a newly launched aerospace and defense technology company,](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/nordyn-group/) is redefining how drones — and potentially much more — will be built in the future. The company’s co-founder, Vitalii Pogrebniak, describes himself as “an engineer by trade and by mindset,” and someone who “prints, assembles, breaks, and re-designs things.”

This pragmatic, field-oriented philosophy characterizes NORDYN’s approach. The company’s mission is to decentralize and scale production, allowing drones and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to be manufactured where they are needed most — not in a distant, centralized factory, but directly on the front lines or within local supply hubs.

“Our goal,” Vitalii says, “is to make decentralized production as real as 3D printing end plastic components. We are the partner that allows your idea to be mass produced — not in a garage where you assemble one or two samples, but in facilities capable of assembling thousands.”

This vision begins with the future of drone manufacturing but also extends to a new industrial model — one that merges additive manufacturing, digital design, and modular production into a resilient, global network of micro-factories. Vitalii calls it “expeditionary production.”

## From concepts to deployable manufacturing systems

The origins of NORDYN Group lie in the chaos and creativity of Ukraine’s wartime innovation ecosystem. Despite limited funding, unstructured supply chains, and a lack of formal standardization, Ukrainian engineers have produced some of the most adaptive and effective drones in the world. Vitalii sees this as a model for the future — a system that favors speed, adaptability, and local resilience over rigid industrial processes.

He explains, “We’re not standardizing a specific drone. We’re standardizing materials, design, and the production process. It’s a bit like McDonald’s — you have the base ingredients for all franchisees, and you can use them to make multiple products. It’s the same plywood, the same foam, the same electronics, but depending on what’s needed at the front line, you can assemble a reconnaissance copter, an attack drone, or an interceptor.”

This concept — which NORDYN refers to as the “drone kitchen” — transforms traditional defense production. Instead of waiting months for centralized procurement or export approvals, small teams can assemble drones locally using standardized kits, shared design data, and additive manufacturing tools.

“Wars aren’t won with beautiful renders or multi-year procurement cycles,” Vitalii says. “They’re won with things that are affordable, fast to produce, and proven in the field.”

## Addressing challenges in traditional drone production

Today’s traditional defense production faces severe limitations. Current drones on the market are slow, costly, and fragile — often requiring high upfront investments and relying on centralized, bureaucratic manufacturing structures. They are not designed for mass production or availability at scale.

These systems represent an overdiversified zoo of platforms, many with low production throughput and high sunk costs. They tend to be overly complex and mission-specific, making them inflexible and prone to quick obsolescence. Moreover, the bottlenecks and vulnerabilities of centralized production make it difficult to respond quickly to operational needs or adapt to changing missions.

For NORDYN, this inefficiency represents both a challenge and an opportunity.

NORDYN’s answer to these systemic flaws is the Defense Production Grid. This decentralized, scalable production network leverages regional cpabilities and local materials to achieve high throughput per unit and rapid innovation cycles.By enabling on-demand and on-site production, the model mitigates export regulation issues and removes dependency on fragile global supply chains. “We build for mission, not for stockpiles,” Vitalii emphasizes.

At the heart of this approach is DRN:X — NORDYN’s modular UAV Micro Factory grid. This is a virtual production network that brings drone manufacturing directly to where it’s needed — fast, flexible, and resilient, with operational security (OPSEC) built in.

Each micro-factory node acts as a self-sufficient, digitally connected production unit capable of producing UAVs, spare parts, and mission-specific payloads. Together, they form an interconnected, resilient grid of UAV production nodes powered by additive manufacturing and local component supply chains.

“Europe has an incredibly deep production knowledge base for high-tech equipment,” Vitalii notes. “We’re simply condensing that expertise into micro-factories.”

## The ARAWN UAV platform: modular, mission-ready, scalable

NORDYN’s flagship solution, the ARAWN UAV platform, embodies this new paradigm. It is a multi-role, multi-size drone family optimized for mass production in the DRN:X grid — exceeding 500 units per month per node.

Each ARAWN system is cost-efficient, high-endurance, and adaptable to mission-specific needs, ranging from ISR and strike missions to counter-UAV (CUAV) and relay operations.

The family includes configurations from 5-inch FPV drones to 6-meter endurance platforms, with electric, ICE, or turbine propulsion options and optional VTOL kits. Endurance ranges from 40 minutes for FPVs to 15 hours for long-range ARAWN models operating at altitudes up to 5,000 meters.

At the core of each unit is the NORDYN Nexus — an AI-enabled flight controller that powers autonomous operations, data integration, and mission flexibility.

This modular architecture ensures that all family members can be produced within the same DRN:X setup, using shared components and standardized manufacturing tools. As Vitalii puts it, “It’s all about the same ingredients — you just cook them differently depending on what’s needed.”

## Networked micro-factories powered by AM

Currently, NORDYN operates from its newly established facility in southern Germany, but its ambitions are much broader. Despite being officially incorporated only days before the interview, the company already has “a pipeline of 18 customers,” Vitalii explains. “We’re still in the proof-of-concept stage, but by January, we expect to be one hundred percent occupied with production for customers.”

Two of those customers are major defense organizations — one in Germany and another in the CEE region — that together require around 25,000 drones annually.

These numbers reflect the rising demand for affordable, expendable UAVs that can be produced locally, rapidly deployed, and easily replaced. “You can lose a drone that costs 50,000 euros anytime because of a mistake or wind,” Vitalii notes. “Better to have a cost-effective solution — enough to use them without hesitation.”

NORDYN’s collaboration with Replique, a German company specializing in distributed manufacturing networks, strengthens this model. “They are our biggest partner,” Vitalii says. “We are working with them using their software for our factories.”

Through Replique’s network, parts can be manufactured through vetted additive and traditional processes across a distributed supply chain — perfectly aligning with NORDYN’s decentralized production vision.

People with 3D printers book the order, print it, and send it — sometimes directly to the front line.”

## A new defense paradigm

For NORDYN Group, the long-term ambition extends well beyond military applications. The same principles that make decentralized manufacturing effective in wartime — agility, local sourcing, and digital collaboration — can also reshape civil industries.

“In mountain rescue, firefighting, or disaster zones, you need drones immediately,” Vitalii explains. “You don’t want to wait for imports. You produce them where they are needed.”

Still, defense remains the proving ground. As Vitalii emphasizes, “An FPV drone for 500 euros can be twenty times more effective than a Javelin worth over 100,000 dollars. This marks the end of the traditional defense industry.”

He believes Western countries can learn much from Ukraine’s approach — standardization of modular platforms, decentralized local manufacturing, and the courage to experiment with low-cost, fast-iterating designs.

“Customers are better than investors,” he says pragmatically. “Because customers pay you money. Investors take part of your company.”

Even with limited resources, NORDYN’s ambitions are global. “We are building something that is globally designed but produced on the edge,” Pogrebniak concludes. “Our goal is to create a manufacturing hub of hubs — a system that can adapt, survive, and produce, wherever it’s needed.”
