Night King wins first prize in the first Life-size 3D Print contest
Incredibly realistic C3PO and Danaerys take home second and third place award

Life-size 3D printing is emerging as one of the biggest – literally – consumer applications for 3D printing. The Life-size 3D Print Facebook Page is now the de facto global association for “Life-size 3D printeers” from all over the world and the projects they create and publish get more impressive by the day. That’s why Jeff Vaesken, the FB community’s administrator, launched the first Life-size 3D Print contest.
Among the 36 initial submissions – that 3dpbm was also called to vote on – three made it to the final prizes. The rewards were made available in collaborations with the contest’s official sponsors: 3D model marketplace Gambody, Hotends.fr, Belgian 3D printer and consumables reseller 3DOnline and independent CAD software developer LuBan.
While it was really hard to select the winning projects among so many great entries, in the end the jurors voted for the Night Kind sculpture, created by user Tatiana. As Great Prize, she will receive a $50 dollar gift certificate to use on a 3D model from Gambody. Clearly the prize is symbolic, as the material alone used in the print likely cost several hundred, but glory is priceless.
“I really want to thank all those who have submitted entries and all members of the Life-size 3D print community,” said Jeff Vaesken. “We also want to thank our jurors and our sponsors: everyone has worked really hard to make this contest a great success. Congratulations to all the winners and I hope that we will be able to see a lot more fantastic entries in the next edition of this contest, which is currently planned for sometime during 2020.”
The second and third prize winners also were quite impressive. The second classified entry comes from another fantastical universe: a life-size C3PO, which looks identical (or even better) than the one featured in the original movies. How far have we come, that we are able to create special effects that once took teams of professionals right at home?
The third classified entry is once again from the Games of Thrones cruel fantasy world: Danerys, the Mother of Dragons. The photo below on the left looks like a render but it is actually real, as demonstrated by the photo on the right.
As Vaesken said, the next appointment is for 2020, but in the meantime, the Life-size 3D Print page continues to welcome new and progressively more impressive creations. Check out some of the latest ones below:
