# New Ferrari Luce didn’t use 3D printing and it shows

The new Ferrari Luce is, in this writer's humble opinion, one of the ugliest cars in the history of carmaking. Judging by comments on social media, it has 99% of Ferrari fans horrified, and Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari likely turning in his grave. How could Ferrari produce something this aesthetically off-brand? One answer may lie in the company's decision not to intensively use additive manufacturing in its EV production.

Using AM is not automatically a sign of genuine innovation. But most of the world's most innovative products do use it. From all information available, Ferrari didn't (at least not officially and to any noticeable extent), and that's probably why the Ferrari Luce looks less like a vision of the future and more like a step backward. It looks like a futuristic car from an 1980s movie.

What should Ferrari have done to truly transform its brand with electric power? One possible approach could have been to use AM extensively to lighten the car's body, allowing a recognizably Ferrari-shaped car to be driven by electric motors and powered by batteries. That would have been a real revolution.

If Ferrari wanted to experiment with a radically different design language—something that looks like a pre-AM Jony Ive-designed iPhone—they could have founded an internal spinoff, called it Ferr-Ivy, and taken it to market under that name with all the disruptive ambition they wanted. That way, if they made a mess of it — which they did — the Ferrari brand would have come out clean. The spinoff could have drawn on Ferrari's experience and resources, but it should never have carried the Ferrari name, the brand, or the prancing horse. At least then they would not have damaged a storied company and an automotive myth.

Ferrari's official press release runs to 9,800 words about the innovation in the Luce. Not one of them mentions additive manufacturing or specifics about advanced production methods. This is not ignorance: Ferrari has been using AM—both metal and polymer—in Formula 1 for years and [has more recently begun applying it in its ICE road cars](https://www.voxelmatters.com/new-ferrari-f80-to-integrate-metal-3d-printed-parts/). The omission was a deliberate choice of the design and production teams, and the car reflects it.

The result is that if you want to see the most exciting automotive innovation today, [you look to Czinger for combustion engineering](https://www.voxelmatters.com/goodyears-fast-is-in-us-campaign-puts-3d-printed-hypercar-at-the-center/) (like Goodyear did) and to [BYD (for record-breaking lightweighting)](https://www.voxelmatters.com/byd-achieved-30-weight-saving-with-record-breaking-am-chassis/) or [Bugatti Rimac](https://www.voxelmatters.com/bugatti-rimac-to-open-am-capable-facility-in-italy/) for EVs. All are heavy and outspoken users of additive manufacturing. Ferrari doesn't seem to want to be in that game with Luce.

A counterargument may be that the Luce is designed to be a production car priced at "just" $600,000, not a limited-production hypercar costing several million, like a Czinger or a Bugatti Rimac. Fair enough. But Ferrari could have hit that price point while implementing a proper AM production line—and delivered something that actually looked like the future.

A $600,000 Ferrari EV with the proportions and presence of a Ferrari supercar, built lighter and faster through additive manufacturing, would have been extraordinary. It could have been done. AM could have helped. Instead, someone decided to change the future without fully understanding it. Let some Luce shine on that.
