Electronics 3D printing company Nano Dimension has signed a multi-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with South Korea’s Chungbuk Technopark (CBTP), a non-profit research institute focused on the smart IT, consumer goods, transportation, energy and bio-health sectors. The collaboration will see the partners working together to advance electronics 3D printing and applications.

Nano Dimension and CBTP will aim to streamline the development of electronics using Nano Dimension’s DragonFly Pro 3D printer, which was installed at CBTP late last year. As part of the MoU, the Israeli company will provide knowledge, technical expertise and end-to-end support to researchers at the Korea technopark, who will leverage the DragonFly system to improve electronic components (in terms of size, weight, assembly) and integrate them into existing structures.

“We are proud to work with CBTP, a leading research institute, to continually advance additive manufacturing of electronics and pave the way for innovative applications,” commented Amit Dror, CEO of Nano Dimension. “We are constantly developing and presenting exciting new applications and providing our customers cutting-edge solutions for electronics design and manufacturing. By collaborating with our customers and partners, we can combine both parties’ knowledge and expertise for developing the next generation capabilities in additive manufacturing of electronics.”

So far, the partners have already made some noteworthy achievements, including the development of a fully functional 3D printed IoT communication device that can shorten development times for IoT devices up to 90%. CBTP researchers have also 3D printed side mount boards and PCBs with capacitors using Nano Dimension’s DragonFly system. The ability to embed capacitors and side mounting enables electronics engineers to integrate more functionalities into a single circuit board—a capability which is in growing demand with the influx of IoT devices.

“This research agreement is an excellent platform to work together with Nano Dimension on a long-term program of research focused on the crucial design and prototyping phases of innovative electronic projects,” said Song,I Hun, Ph. D., Director of Semiconductor IT Center. “By combining our know-how from industrial players and academia with Nano dimension’s expertise in precision 3D printing, our researchers will have the tools to accelerate growth in the high-tech electronics arena in Korea.”
