# METALNOX cuts propeller repair time by 20% with SHINING 3D tech

METALNOX, a Mallorca-based propeller repair specialist, has reduced its propeller repair cycle time by 20% after integrating [SHINING 3D](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/shining-3d/)'s FreeScan Combo Series handheld 3D scanner into its workshop operations. 

The company had previously relied on point-by-point analog measurement methods that left gaps in inspection coverage and created logistical friction on the shop floor.

Under the previous workflow, large propellers weighing several tons had to be moved from the repair table to a separate measuring table using overhead cranes and additional personnel. 

That handling process consumed time and introduced the risk of accidental damage. In addition, the approach also measured only specific points on a propeller rather than its full geometry, meaning gradual issues such as blade thickness reduction could go undetected until they affected vessel performance.

## Portability removes handling bottleneck

[The FreeScan Combo Series](https://www.voxelmatters.com/shining-3d-highlights-wireless-scanning-ecosystem-at-formnext-and-dubai-airshow/) resolved both issues. The handheld device enabled technicians to scan propellers directly on the repair table without disassembly or repositioning. It also integrated with the analysis software METALNOX already used, avoiding retraining or workflow disruption. 

Where previous inspections were constrained to the measurement points defined under the ISO 484 standard, full-surface scans now capture the complete blade volume.

[The scanner's portability proved to be the differentiating factor](https://www.voxelmatters.com/historic-chinese-courtyard-house-fully-digitally-scanned-for-preservation-using-shining-3d-scanners/). Eliminating repeated crane lifts and part transfers removed the persistent bottleneck that had slowed turnaround across multiple concurrent jobs. METALNOX now inspects both fixed and variable-pitch propellers that previously required considerably more time and additional measurement tooling.

“For us, one of the biggest benefits we've seen is the ability to offer our clients improved quality and speed of service,” said Gastón Dubois, Production Manager at Grupo METALNOX. “We can perform much faster and more accurate assessments without having to disassemble components or move them from the repair table to the measuring table, which represents a saving of time and costs for both them and us.”

METALNOX serves commercial shipping lines, naval vessels, and luxury yachts, a client base for which propeller geometry tolerances have grown increasingly tight as fuel efficiency standards have become more stringent.
