# Materialise takes minority stake in Replasia

[Materialise](https://www.voxelmatters.directory/company/materialise/) has taken a minority stake in Replasia, a Belgian medtech start-up developing [3D printed implants and anatomical analysis software](https://www.voxelmatters.com/scientists-develop-phox-polymer-for-safer-medical-implants/) for hip preservation surgery. Medtech entrepreneur Andy Christensen was also involved in the deal as a co-investor.

The investment reflects [Materialise's position that personalization in orthopedic care is shifting upstream toward preservation rather than replacement](https://www.voxelmatters.com/materialise-posts-q1-2026-profit-as-medical-segment-and-margin-gains-offset-revenue-headwinds/). Replasia's two core offerings sit at the center of that viewpoint: HipStudio, a commercially available anatomical analysis service that provides surgeons with patient-specific measurements to support pre-operative planning, and the 3D Shelf Implant, a personalized, 3D printed device placed outside the joint capsule for patients with certain forms of hip dysplasia.

Hip dysplasia, a condition in which the hip socket does not fully cover the femoral head, leaves the joint unstable. Conventional surgical options for affected young adults can be highly invasive and require lengthy rehabilitation. Replasia's 3D Shelf Implant is designed as a less invasive alternative.

## Trial underway in the Netherlands

In August 2025, Replasia initiated a first-in-human clinical investigation of the implant in the Netherlands. The study evaluates the device's safety and performance relative to current standard surgical procedures for adult hip dysplasia.

Replasia said the investment would support product development and market introductions in both Europe and the United States, with [Materialise contributing expertise in medical 3D technology](https://www.voxelmatters.com/learn-about-the-materialise-2026-outlook-from-ceo-brigitte-de-vet/) and Christensen bringing experience in the commercialization of personalized medical devices.

Materialise stated the investment also complements its existing portfolio of personalized orthopedic solutions, which includes patient-specific acetabular implants for complex revision cases. 

The company reported that Replasia will draw on its experience in digital planning software and established pathways to market as it progresses toward broader clinical adoption.
