Materialise adds custom PEEK implants to its CMF portfolio
Expansion gives European surgeons a choice between titanium and PEEK within a single digital workflow
Materialise NV, a leader in 3D printed medical devices and software, has expanded its cranio-maxillofacial (CMF) portfolio with the addition of custom-made polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implants, giving surgeons across Europe the ability to select between titanium and PEEK for patient-specific reconstructions, all while working within a single digital workflow.
The PEEK implants integrate into Materialise’s existing CMF infrastructure, which includes collaborative 3D surgical planning with clinical engineers using Mimics Enlight CMF software, case management through Mimics Flow, and fixation via Materialise Standard+ Solutions.
The company stated that the addition preserves the continuity of its validated, traceable process regardless of material selection.
PEEK’s radiolucent properties have made it a preferred option for cranial reconstruction, facial contour restoration, and onlay applications amongst surgeons, stated Materialise, while titanium remains the established material for load-bearing cases. Materialise also confirmed the two-material offering is intended to address a broader range of patient needs.
“Personalization isn’t just about material choices but about the precision of the planning process and the reliability of execution,” said Maarten Zandbergen, Market Manager at Materialise.
“Our clinical engineers work hand in hand with surgeons to design each implant, and that collaborative approach remains constant whether the case calls for titanium or PEEK. What changes is the surgeon’s freedom to choose; what stays the same is the peace of mind that comes from a proven, end-to-end process.”
Each PEEK implant is manufactured in Europe by Ad Mirabiles, a partner operating under an EN ISO 13485 certified quality management system. Materialise has committed to a 72-hour turnaround following surgical plan approval, consistent with the timeline it offers for titanium implants.
The custom-made PEEK implants are now available to surgeons across Europe, excluding Switzerland, where Materialise CMF solutions are currently established.
