Italian 3D printing company Lumi Industries is preparing to unveil a new desktop 3D printer at Formnext this week. The resin-based 3D printer, called Lumi³ (LumiCube), was built for easy and accurate additive production and integrates a slew of new features that provide better efficiency and quality.

Lumi Industries has been out of the spotlight for some time now. 2017 marked its last big release (the LumiPocket LT) and since then it has been providing R&D services to a multinational company. Now, however, the company is ready to focus on the development and release of new products. The first example of this is the Lumi³ LCD-based 3D printer.

According to Lumi, the new 3D printer integrates a number of new patent-pending solutions which allow users to save both time and money with their prints. Among these features is a patent-pending disposable FEP thermoformed resin var, low-cost integrated post-curing, a smart build platform and more. Let’s take a closer look at the new hardware release.

Easy FEP Vat

The Lumi³ 3D printer features the patent-pending EFV system (Easy FEP Vat), which is a disposable FEP thermoformed resin vat that is both simple to load and unload and to clean. The ease-of-use is associated the the vat’s disposability. According to Lumi Industries, when the FEP film becomes foggy or ruined, users can simply replace it.

Lumi Industries also suggests that users can get a EFV for each resin being used to avoid any risk of contamination during the build. A clear cover also enables users to keep a close eye on the printing process.

Integrated post curing

To save users time and money, Lumi Industries has found a novel solution for more efficient post-curing of parts: the HUT system (Hinged Mask for UV Transforming). The patent-pending system can simply be installed over the UV LED array of the 3D printer after tilting the LCD screen. Once the HUT system is mounted on its hinged support with integrated sensors, it enables easier post-curing.

The HUT system comprises a glass bottom, which collects debris and keeps it out of the 3D printer as well as letting the UV light through. The internal mirror surface of HUT reflects UV rays uniformly onto parts which are fixed with clips on a rotating perforated plexiglass basket. This approach allows parts to be cured from all sides inside the 3D printer.

“I asked myself, since we are using UV LEDs to 3D print, why not use the same LEDs for post curing?” said Davide Marin, CEO of Lumi Industries. “Thus, the patent-pending HUT system was designed.”

Modular Tray System

Another notable feature of the Lumi³ printer is its Modular Tray System, a smart build platform that can be tuned for different materials. For instance, when using medium and low viscosity resins, the printer comes with a module that includes a flexible magnetically fixed metal plate. At the end of the print, the plate can simply be removed and lightly bent so the parts come off.

For high viscosity materials—which can be more challenging to adhere to the build plate—the printer comes with a plate made from machined class, which promotes better adhesion with the resin materials.

Process control and more

Finally, the Lumi³ machine includes a 7” touchscreen with a proprietary process control software that gives users direct control of the 3D printer. Users can also benefit from preloaded video tutorials and guides, real-time notifications, 3D printing process reports and heat data diagnostics, and easy material and spare parts ordering.

The printer also comes with a handful of extra features, such as a passive heating system that maintains consistent temperatures for resins, force sensing sensors that make sure the screen does not receive excessive pressure in the 3D printing process, parallel UV system, HEPA and Carbon active air filters and a precision THK linear motion system.

“We are aware that many LCD 3D printer are currently in the market,” added Marin. “But we found that our patent pending solutions and smart improvements actually make users’ life a lot easier.”

Additional specifications that are worth mentioning are:

  • A build area of 120.96 x 68.04 x 100 mm
  • Layer thickness of 20/30/50/100 µm
  • Average build speed of 30 mm/h
