LimaCorporate opens new facilities dedicated to 3D printing orthopedics

Italian company opens Research & Innovation Center and Advanced Laboratory for Testing and Analysis

LimaCorporate, an Italy-based multinational specializing in orthopedics, has today announced the launch of a new Research & Innovation Center (R&I Center) and an Advanced Laboratory for Testing and Analysis (ATLAs). The new facilities, based at LimaCorporate’s headquarters in Udine, Italy, will be dedicated entirely to 3D printing and advanced testing applications.

Spanning nearly 1,000 square meters, the new facilities will serve to “strengthen the collaboration” between LimaCorporate’s various departments with a view to create new and innovative product solutions.

The R&I Center will house a range of additive manufacturing and medical imaging equipment and will be operated by a team of over 50 engineers. At the center, the team will use 3D printing, as well as valuable data gathered in each production job, to develop state-of-the-art orthopedic implant solutions.

LimaCorporate new facilities 3D

At the ATLAs laboratories, LimaCorporate experts will carry out experimental verification as well as simulation of new materials, production processes and orthopedic solutions. The labs will play a critical role in introducing and rolling out new 3D printing-based orthopedic solutions. ATLAs will be managed by an Industry 4.0 Web App, which will provide a complete digital flow of activities and data.

Both new Italy-based facilities will strengthen LimaCorporate’s broader operations and hone in on innovative product development. Not only providing internal benefits, the R&I Center and ATLAs will also present new collaboration opportunities for LimaCorporate by attracting scientists, surgeons and companies from across the orthopedic field.

A year ago, LimaCorporate announced a significant milestone in the world of 3D printing orthopedics: it established the first AM facility for custom implants in a hospital environment in partnership with the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York. By creating an AM center at the hospital (rather than shipping parts from its own facilities to the hospital) LimaCorporate aims to reduce wait times for custom implants to improve patient care.
